MyLitter - One Deal At A Time

This past weekend we went to the Skinny Cow Perfect Cup event downtown Houston. I am so impressed with companies that really invest in the consumers how are ultimately the ones who buy their products. Many do not care or do anything, even refuse to send out coupons.

Skinny Cow put on a great event, they had, food, free ice cream, free candy bars, free t-shirt, free bra fitting, free bra, wine, door prizes and a great swag bag. This event was free to the public. Skinny Cow also gives back to the community by providing clothing, training and confidence to women who are interviewing and out of work.

Since we were already half way to the beach we decided to just make it a day, take the family and go to the beach. If you can only imagine how silly poor Paul and the kids looked at a bra fitting event. My poor family, they are good sports!

After we made it out of the Skinny Cow event, 10 lbs heavier from all the ice cream, we headed down to Galveston for pizza and swimming. My husband had a mortgage office in Galveston a few years ago, (before both hurricanes!) and we spent a lot of time down there. We found the best pizza place EVER. It is a total hole in the wall called Gino’s, they make the best pizza and have an awesome thick crust.

The best part is that while you are waiting for your pizza, the kids get mini balls of dough to play with and pretend to make their own pizza. Or in the case of the 1 year old, lets play “how much dough can I eat before my parents can dig it out of my mouth”!

Sitting on the beach at Galveston I realized that I have failed my children. All they have really needed in life to make them happy is a spoon and some sand.

Forget the fancy educational toys and the nice electronics. Just give them wet salty sand.

I have also failed my 7th child. My kids are all brilliant and above average in just about everything. Just ask me 🙂 They learn quickly and never have to be told or taught something twice.

I saw something this weekend that shook me as a parent and made me reconsider my parenting abilities.

My 13 month old spends about 90% of her awake hours thinking this one thought:

“Can this fit in my mouth?”

Nothing escapes the taste test from this child.

As we sat down on the sand she quickly, before I could stop her, shoved a handful of salty wet sand in her mouth. She was mad! I quickly washed her off and rinsed out her mouth and told her, “no, yucky!” We went back to play. As soon as she sat down, she stuck another hand full of sand in her mouth, and was weirdly surprised that it tasted bad, as if she had not done the very same thing minutes ago. I washed her off again, and as I was sticking my sandals on, she shoved another hand full in her mouth.

I stared making excuses for her, was she hungry, lacking a mineral in her diet or just deciding if she liked the texture of wet or dry sand?  Who knows? But for 4 hours and 30 minutes of the 4 hours and 35 minutes we were there, the child continued to try and eat sand and then get mad that it tasted nasty.

I found myself hoping that she stayed cute, as I do not see a college education in her future.

Oh, I am totally kidding, she is a completely normal 13 month old and will grow out of it! We are still hoping the 14 year old will stop eating sand, at least by the time he goes to college! 🙂
