I got an awesome comment from a reader the other day and I wanted to post it here and comment:
Hi Tiffany! I have a question relating to the Tide/Catalina deal you posted recently. I went to our Kroger tonight and saw the Tide is $14.99 each. We do have the buy 2 and get a $5.00 catalina deal here. My question is: is at Walmart you can get the same size bottle for $11.97 each. So rounding both prices off ($15.00 for one and $12.00 for the other, that’s about a $3.00 differnce). So if I buy the higher costing ones at Kroger, I’m spending a total of $6.00 extra dollars (than I would if I bought them at Walmart). So then I when I get the $5.00 catalina, in my calculation, they’d be giving me back the $5.00 I would’ve NOT spent at Walmart plus in the end I would’ve paid an extra dollar for them at Kroger: (After the $5.00 catalina). So I’m having trouble seeing why people think this is a good deal?? Can you help me figure this out? Still learning!! Thanks, Lori
Lori is right! Just because there is a catalina deal, it doesn’t make any sense to spend more money just because there is something exciting about the deal, like the catalina. Originally, we thought the catalina might be good on the Tide small bottles. THAT would have been a good deal. But not if you have to buy the over priced large bottles at Kroger.
This is what it looks like:
::AT WALMART::
Buy 2 Tide Large Bottles $11.97
Use any coupons you have for Tide
Total: $23.94
Final Cost: $23.94
::AT KROGER::
Buy 2 Tide large bottles $14.99
Use any coupons you have for Tide
Total: $29.98
Get back $5 catalina
Final Cost: $24.98
Even with the $5 catalina back at Kroger you are still paying MORE than if you would have bought them at Walmart without the hassle of a catalina!!
Awesome comment Lori!

At my Kroger the 100 oz. size Tide is priced at $11.99. Is this the size that the catalina works on? If so the price would be lower than Walmart after the catalina.

Personally, I don’t really like shopping at Walmart. I prefer to do most of my shopping at Kroger. My husband has a large truck and he scores with the points I accrew at Kroger. I keep my eye on the gift card point for fuel. For me, spending an extra dollar at Kroger might or might not be worth it but when I pair it with the bonus points on fuel, it might just help my family save at the pump. One month my husband was able to save over 30 dollars at the fuel tank. I would spend a dollar to save 30 anyday. You just have to know your prices and bonuses at various stores. Happy Shopping.

Tide in the 150 oz is 17.92 at walmart.. There is a 1.00 coupon making it 16.92 divide it by the oz that is about 12 Cents an oz… KROGER has Tide for 4.99 for the 50 0z using the 1.00 off coupon making it 3.99 divide it by the oz and you get 8 cents… So technically Kroger is Cheaper…. Just not the Catalina deal..thanks

That deal at Kroger was done last week. You can’t get it for that price anymore.
