This morning I want to bring you some money saving and interesting information from our dentist over at Laraway Family Dentistry.
It might seem a little strange that I am talking about teeth. But in the past few years with my kids and husband we have really been hit hard with dental problems and bills. My dentist has something really cool and interesting that I am going to share with you today.

Interesting. So what would be a suggested healthy alternative for the bad kind of milk?

So what is the best source for getting calcium? If I cut out milk what should I do instead? I’ve felt guilty for the past few months letting my kids have water in their sippy cups in the morning rather than milk (we were wasting too much milk from the sippy cups being left in the car). What are some good choices for toddlers instead of milk? Does the same hold true with soy, goat, & almond or rice milk?

First of all I love your website and think your amazing but I find this distasteful for your site. Are you saying we shouldn’t give our kids milk? What point are you trying to make?? My kids have been drinking milk there whole lives, oldest 14 and youngest is 4. They are all cavity free and they drink milk for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Just curious on your thoughts since you have 7 kiddos. I hope this doesn’t sound negative because I’m not meaning to come across that way.

Thanks for the feedback, I really do appreciate it! I give my kids milk, I always have. We are not big milk drinkers compared to a lot of people, but we do drink milk. There must be a little confusion as I didn’t write the article, or say to not drink milk. It was advice from Dr. Laraway as how to prevent calcium build up on teeth as we get older. I will make sure that she addresses that, and hopefully clear that up.

Aside from getting a cow, (LOL! I live in a tract home ;o) what’s the next best thing aside from raw cow’s milk? Fortunately, here in CA we CAN get raw milk @ healthfood stores. Unfortunately, it’s $5.00/quart. That’s just not in my budget ;o(

Thank you for bringing this up. Great information along with the research behind it! It’s about time people hear the truth about milk!

Milk is NOT the culprit it is the SUGAR in the Milk that is the problem. Say you give your kids milk right before they goto bed. Well they need to brush that off there teeth before bed, they should be brushing there teeth 2xs a day just like grown ups. And never give a child milk or straight juice in there cup they goto bed with it. It all Boils down to SUGAR. It will sit on there teeth and eat away at the enamel if you do that.

We have recently switched to silk almond milk as an alternative to cows milk. It actually has more calcium than cows milk and the same amount of vitamin d. Of course if u have nut allergies this won’t help. One side note, u want to stay away from almond milk with carragean in it. There is research showing it has been linked to cancer. Aldi and Silk brands are good. Its not for everyone but hopefully helps. Oh and my kids took a liking to it. It was different at first but now they drink like they did with cows milk.

Milk does not agree with everyone — even the veterinarians tell you not to feed your dog and/or cat milk. Think of it this way, humans are the only mammal on earth who drink milk past infancy. And then we drink cow’s milk. Silk Soy, Silk Almond or Blue Diamond Almond are great alternatives and usually have less calories and more calcium. I have not found a good alternative for cheese – and I miss it terribly.

During my last visit to my dentist I was told not to brush my teeth right after I eat sugar or other foods. She said it makes the enamel on my teeth soft and they will feel fuzzy. She said the best thing to do is to drink water which will neutralize the acid and THEN brush my teeth otherwise I will be brushing the enamel away.
I thought that was interesting.
