This weekend you can expect to find 2 inserts in the Sunday paper, The Red Plum (RP) and the Smart Source (SS). Coupons that are in the papers can be regional, but for the most part they are the same. You can see what might be coming to you by looking HERE.
I get anywhere from 6-10 papers on a Sunday. I have 3 that are delivered to my house ($.50 each through the Houston Chronicle) then I usually buy 3 more at the $.99 store ( ironically for $1.50) THEN, I usually fight my pregnant sister for my parents 🙂 Just kidding!
I try and cut my coupons out right away or they get stacked in the corner all week which drives me nuts!
** In many places you can buy the Sunday paper (Early Edition) on Saturday. I try and get some of those here in Houston so that if there are any deals that I can use the new coupons on before the sales switch I have the chance!

Here’s a tip. I don’t know if it is the same in Houston, but here in West Tennessee Dollar Tree and Deals stores (where everything is $1) sell the Sunday paper for $1. Cool!

I noticed that one of the other Extreme Couponers on TLC got the leftover papers from her city before they recycled them. Do you know what Houston Chronicle does with their leftover papers? I work close to the building downtown, but I hear they don’t print there anymore. They print at a warehouse somewhere else. I’m temped to call.
Tiffany says
No, they don’t. I was told it was illegal to get them that way. The Chron told me that directly.
Natalie says
Oh well! Worth a shot!

Natalie, I used to work as a Subscriber Services rep downtown. No, they do not print coupons there any longer. They stopped that well before I worked for them in 2002. Even as an employee (I left in 2005) I couldn’t get access to leftover papers, and we were supposed to be educated about what was in it in case a customer called.
Amanda says
I am pretty sure that person said that she got them from the person who delivered the paper, before they took them to the recycle center, not the actual city. I have heard of friends who know the paper delivery person, and they get the extra inserts from them.

I get 2 copies of the Houston Chron delivered to my house every Sunday but I still have to pay $1.00 for each I just called them and they said thats for new customers only! 🙁 I think I will subscribe as a “new” customer to my neighbors house and cancel mine for the savings lol
Dawn (CoupoNewbie) says
Samantha, if you are persistent and ask for a supervisor, they will give you that price. I used to work there. I know. If worse comes to worst, cancel the subscription, buy off the news stand for a month, and then call up for the special again. Overall you’ll save more money. Also, if you opt for EZPay from a credit/debit card or bank account, you can often get a discounted rate. Also, they might still offer a discount for paying for 1 year up front. When I left there in 2005, they were offering *severely* discounted subscriptions for people in rural areas, for example Lake Jackson. If you have a student in a HISD school, ask the school if they’re involved in CIE (Chronicle in Education). If they are, you’ll be eligible to get 1 daily/Sunday paper delivered at no charge.
Now, keep in mind that the info I’m giving is nearly 6 years old, so things very well might have changed since then.

Thanks for the info on the 99cent store. I may see you there;)

Just went to the 99 cent store on Westheimer, Sunday papers are 1.50 there. I’m not sure if it’s different from store to store…
