I have wanted for along time to do a series on work from home opportunities for Mom’s. It is something that is really close to my heart. I have all through our marriage always done something to bring in a little extra money. I have made jewelry, had a little ceramic business and as a licensed stylist cut hair from home. Many times it was just “fun” money and other times it really made a difference in our lifestyle. I consider couponing a wonderful “part time” job, but sometimes and especially in this economy, you need a little more.
I am really excite to profile a few women who have taken the time to tell us what they do so that we might learn something form them or get some good ideas!
From Roslen M. – Graphic Designer and Illustrator
Why did you start:
I was looking for a way to supplement my freelance graphic design and illustration business so that I could stay at home with my newborn baby.
What does it take:
A Mac or PC with internet access and excellent knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. You should also have some sort of background in art or photography. I have a Bachelors of Fine Art degree and Graphic Design.
How many hours a week do you work:
As much or as little as I want. I have currently been on a hiatus for the last two years. Commonly 25 hours a week.
What is an estimate of what you can earn:
This depends on how well your artwork is what the demand is. I currently have over 700 images available for licensing and royalties range from .25 cents to $500 per image use.
How long have you been doing this:
8 years, but the last two I haven’t created new artwork.
How long did it take to get certified and how much was it ( if applies) :
Most stock art companies will have you go through an online audition process that contains several steps to make sure that you understand all the technical aspects of what is required. And also to make sure that your work matches their business model and needs of their clients. This process usually takes a couple of weeks to get approved.
Any other suggestions or comments:
Obviously the more images you create, the more money you can make. I like doing this because it relieves me the pressure of dealing with clients and deadlines so that I”m not on a demanding schedule. I also get asked to do a lot of custom work from people that see my images and this leads to other design work as well. The major stock companies I work for are istockphoto.com, dreamstime.com and shutterstock.com. Just look for the contributors link.
Another avenue for a stay at home freelancer is Elance.com. It’s a bid and job proposal website that connects freelancers with business owners that need work done. This has been a healthy source of income for me and has led to many repeat clients.

1. I write Kindle books. It brings in some extra money, and I enjoy creating them.
2. Speaking of Illustrators, I need to find a good, reasonably priced one for my Kindle books. If you are looking to get a start as an illustrator, please let me know.
Thanks!
