Walgreens can be a very rewarding place to shop, but also very frustrating. For more help shopping at Walgreens go HERE and read my Walgreens 101.
I have been getting some emails lately about people not being able to use a coupon and get a RR (register reward) back. At least this is what they are being told by the cashiers. This is NOT true. You can use a coupon AND get a RR back.
If you need a little help to show your cashier, take a look in the Walgreens weekly ad this week. In the ad it clearly shows Walgreens promoting using a coupon and getting a RR back!
Walgreens is letting you know what coupon you can use in combination with their store sale.
Soooo, I think that makes it hard for a cashier who doesn’t know their stores coupon policy to tell you wrong information when it is printed right in front of them that you are able to do it.
I also wanted to comment on an issue that a reader had on Facebook. She was told by her cashier that she was not allowed to do more than 1 transaction in a day and use RR. This is not true either. I called corporate (to make sure nothing in the policy has changed) and they confirmed that this is not true, although the manager does have the right to limit quantities. They had the store manager give me a call and we had a chance to talk about it. Apparently, local corner store owners were cleaning them out of items and the store was frustrated and so they decided to tell everyone NO.
The manager and I agreed that it is fair for individuals to make multiple reasonable transactions and that they would no longer tell people no. Now, I don’t think that all is going to be smooth at that store all the time, but it is a good start. Sometimes you really do need to call and talk to a manager or corporate and see what can be done and what the policy allows.

I tried to use my MF coupon for the tylenol precise and then the store coupon from the may book, I asked her to scan the MF first to avoid the beep, she said its up to the store manager what order they scan the coupons and that they will only scan the store one first and if the MF makes it free + overage it will not work. Is there away around this?

Wow, I would go to another cashier or store. That stinks!

I personally give the cashier all my MQ’s first and then at the very end pull out my Wags Q’s from my pocket for my tricky cashiers so they have already put in the M Q’s. Most of the time I don’t have a problem.
Tiffany says
Sometimes you have to do it that way!!

Had that problem today. The machine did not print out the catalinas with the coupons. The manager ended up doing a refund, then reringing the product. He was really nice about it.

Thanks for the update Tiffany. I actually did a couple of Walgreens runs yesterday and spent just over $23 for $160 dollars worth of shavers and body lotion using what you outlined a few days ago. I had no issues using coupons in multiple transactions all the while getting and using RR.
Thanks for the info and keep up the great work!

I have a question—-I am new to all this couponing and RR’s at Walgreens. What makes the difference in what order you give the coupons? Thanx.

I had a problem before not getting a register reward when using a coupon when I first started couponing – I read on one website that this happens at the 24 hour Walgreens? Have you heard this before and/or have they changed it?
Also there was an assistant manager that I had never seen at “my” Walgreens and said i could not use B1G1 Free coupon on B1G1 free items … I thought it was specifically stated in their policy but when I went and looked it up on Walgreens site – it just says two coupons can be used on B1G1 Free – does not make a statement about B1G1 coupons.

i thought i had a printed policy from earlier in the year that said that about the BOGO, too. but when they had the right guard BOGO a month or so ago i went back to print the policy and it was different! i still got mine totally free, but i had to print out several examples from the net and talk w/ the manager to make sure the net info was correct.

THANK YOU FOR VERIFYING ALL OF THIS INFORMATION FOR US ๐
Question: Will you be posting the Drugstore weekly freebies that are seen on Tuesdays?
Thanks

My local Walgreens has been very helpful in explaining how their coupon and RR policy work. The one thing I have to watch out for is to not use a RR from the same manufacture as my purchase or I will not get the RR that is expected. For example the recent sale on Bic Soleil razors where you get a $2 RR. You can’t use that $2 RR to make another Bic razor purchase if you want the RR for the purchase. On the RR they tell you who the reward is compliments of so you know not to use it on the same purchase. I had some $3 RR from Cottonelle, so I used them on my razor purchases and then in return used my RR from Bic on my Cottonelle purchase. This allowed me to get all my RR that I was expecting.

My mother in law, sister in law and myself have tried many different stores and they all have their unique issues. My sister in law was told that if she used a coupon that the computer wouldn’t print the RR. My mother in law bought all of the required items and used coupons, RR and followed all of their strict rules of the number of items matching the number of coupons. Then the RR printed out after the transaction, the cashier put them into the trash and told her she couldn’t have them because she used RR to get the deal. We have all had it with Walgreens so we refuse to go back. If the store wanted the customers, then they would properly train their staff like CVS, Rite Aid, Target, and many other stores. It doesn’t matter how good the deal is if you feel leaving like you robbed the place based on the cashiers attitude. I wish that corporate better trained the people to follow their own policies.
mdbc77 says
oh wow! i can’t believe they threw away those rewards! i think i would have had a fit right then and there! sounds like that store is scamming its customers big time! you can just imagine the employees digging out the rewards at the end of the day and using them!

I’m new to shopping at Walgreens after I started reading your blog. I do have various issues at different stores, it can be very frustrating sometimes. Like you said, it depends on store manager. I’ve ran into not able to use B1G1 with other coupons, cashiers said only one transaction per customer per day, RR not printed out, and some cashiers said it’s their policy to scan WG coupons first.
Thanks for sharing your experience here!

I would just start with one of each coupon and go from there. This time in the week your store is probably going to be out of a lot of things.
mdbc77 says
if your coupon is for something that is on sale, but doesn’t offer a register reward, be sure to get a rain check! then, when the item is in stock again you can get the same deal. but, i’ve been told that if it is a register reward deal, they can’t issue the reward later after the sale week. but the rain check is great for the BOGOs this week and the cottonelle cat is thru the 15th (i think?)!

I would also like to comment on Walgreens. I am still waiting for them to restock the vinegar that they had on sale. It will be a month and both stores tell me they haven’t got a shipment from their warehouse. Why when they know they are running an ad they don’t stock up?
CVS is the same deal. I have so many rain checks!
Thanks for letting me vent!

I was told this morning that your only allowed one RR per sale week. That was at the Blalock/Hammerly Walgreens. I told the cashier that I would make different purchases and wait if someone came up behind me. The cashier and mgr both said no. So I will never go back to that Walgreens.
Tiffany says
Call corporate and awoken if this is their policy. It is not. Ask them what you should do.

Thank you all for sharing your Walgreens frustrations. I thought I was the only one being treated so poorly by Walmart. I have shopped with them for years in Ms and La before moving to Katy but last night after visiting two walgreens in the area I am ready to throw in the towel so to speak and give it all to CVS. There is just no reason to be subjected to uneducated and impolite cashiers no matter how great “the deal”. The CVS store on Westgeen and I-10 were comming out of the isles to help me.
Thanks for letting me vent after my very frustrating trip to WG last night. You all pretty much covered the specific problems and I see it is a corporate problem.

oops.. I meant Walgreens in my first paragraph above.

On Sunday I (and a few other ladies with binders that I spotted in the aisles!) went shopping for my deals at Walgreens. First thing I noticed was sale items or BOGO free were not ALL marked on the shelves. I had to stop an employee passing by and double check. Was told they had not gotten to changing everything yet. But after checking out… which went really well I thought I had the charge of $43. I had tallied things up in my head at being around $33. Went to my car and rechecked everything and noticed that I had been charged the non-sale price for a couple of items. Went back in with my bag and talked to the cashier that checked me out. He kind of chuckled and then pointed out that those items were on sale only with the Walgreen’s coupons. I was so overworked on re-checking everything I completely forgot to give him the Walgreen’s coupons! He called his manager up and she fixed it for me, saying the whole time how it happens ALL the time. *blushing*

i had a problem this week when i tried to use 3 of the $3 stayfree rewards for my purchase of 2 Cottonelles and 1 Noxzema razor, the regiter beeped on the third reward and the cashier said the register wouldn’t accept it. after coupons and the first two rewards, my subtotal was still $3.49 before tax; any ideas why it wouldn’t take the last $3 reward? i had a total of 7 items, 3 manqs, and 3 register rewards…

I had a small problem at my Walgreens. When I used my B1G1 for Dry Idea it did not give me my RR. When I asked the cashier why – she said she thought it was because I had used a coupon. Now being new to the couponing thing…normally I would have accepted her answer…but I thought – “No – Tiffany said……” ๐ So I asked to see the manager. He was very nice and very helpful. We noticed that not only did it not give me the RR – it charged me full price instead of the sale price. He took the time to look at all of his Dry Idea products – and he said that I stumped him….and he gave me a Walgreens card for $4.28 (full price plus tax). He commented that I hadn’t graduated to binders yet – :-)…told him I was still trying to get the hang of it. Thanks Tiffany – for all of your great advice! ๐

This has happened two weeks in a row for me at Walgreens. I have about given up shopping here. Personally I prefer CVS anyways bc they give you have 2% of your savings. I tried the Lysol deal buy Lysol get 1 rr. I had $1 off Manufacturer coupon the RR would not print out. I clearly pointed out to the manager on duty that the ad is advising using a coupon to get the razor deal and he told me that if you use a Manu. coupon you don’t get the RR. That’s completely bogus. I told him I know that’s incorrect but there was nothing he could do. The previous week I used $1 off for the Butterfinger Snakerz. He told me I could not use a coupon in which it makes the item Free. (LMAO) I told him that’s incorrect. Another cashier overheard him and said that’s not right just adjust coupon-he did not know how- UGGGHH. Rather not deal with the mayhem.

I HAVE HAD A COUPLE OF PROBLEMS WITH ONE CASHIER AT MY WALGREENS NOT LETTING ME USE COUPONS THAT WOULD MAKE AN ITEM FREE. I WENT YESTERDAY PREPARED TO MAKE HER MISERABLE. SHE WASN’T THERE LUCKILY, BUT THE NEW LADY CASHIER(WHO USUALLY JUST STOCKS) CHECKED ME OUT. BEFORE I COULD EVEN GET MY COUPONS AND IVC OUT OF MY PURSE SHE ALREADY HAD MY ITEMS CHECKED, HAD THE IVC BOOKLET IN HAND SCANNING AND ALSO LETTING ME KNOW ABOUT AN UNADVERTISED RR DEAL. I WAS ALL SMILES! IM THINKING OF ASKING FOR HER THE NEXT TIME I GO IN LOL

Today all 3 walgreens in my town were out of a certain item I was looking for on sale…a manager told me that I could only get a rain check if that item was not on the truck they are receiving on saturday (sale ends sat night)….I explained that I could not get back into town saturday they said that was their policy…disappointed :0(

After reading so many gripes about Walgreens I feel really fortunate that my Walgreens is so helpful. The managers and cashiers all tell you the best way to use your coupons, and what deals you could be overlooking. Tonight I finally got my 4 Schick Hydro 5 razors…and they were completely free.! The cashier took all 4 of the RRs from my previous Cottonelle purchase, along with all the mfr coupons. I also got 10 bags of candy in the same transaction. Total bill was $2.24. $1.26 of that was tax! This was my biggest coupon accompllishment so far. THANKS TIFFANY!!!
