Tax free weekend is coming up for most of us. It is hard to get excited about a sale where you are saving 8.25% BUT the sales that they run on top of that are killer!
The tax free weekend for general merchandise purchased in Texas is scheduled for August 17 – 19, 2012 and applies to the following items:
- Clothing and footwear under $100
- School supplies under $100
- Backpacks under $100 for elementary and secondary students
- Includes layaway items
Keep in mind, too, that not all general merchandise items are included in the sales tax holiday. For example, cowboy boots and climbing boots are tax-free, but ski boots are still taxed during Texas’ tax free weekend. In fact, many sporting goods are not included in the sales tax holiday at all in Texas, like cleats, football pads, and protective helmets, so make sure that you read Texas’ Sales Tax Holiday web page before heading out to the mall.

Kentucky doesn’t offer it 🙁
Massachusetts is August 13th~~ 🙂
Georgia no longer has a tax free weekend… 🙁
I love a discount as much as the next gal, but I can’t deal with the crowds on this weekend. School starts on Monday 8/22, too, here in San Antonio. I would be SO stressed out to try to get all our B2S shopping done the weekend before school starts. This weekend seems to keep get pushed back later and later here in TX.
Thank you for letting me know which weekend to AVOID the mall at all costs!! Not that we go there often, but it is always crazy those weekends. Plus, we don’t have any kids going back to school (just a 3.5 yr old and one I’m working on)
I hear you! I will only venture into somewhere like Kohls where I have an escape plan!
Carters is having a killer sale right now, most stuff is 40-70 percent off PLUS extra 20 percent off your whole bill, and you CAN stack a Carters coupon with that. AND this sale is still happening on Saturday AND if you shop before 10am that day you get double stamps on your punchcard (and I love their punchcard!)
Hi Tiffany 🙂
If you purchase merchandise online during TaxFree weekend, do you pay tax?
I live in Houston and placed an order online at Kohl’s and wasn’t charged any tax!
Now I feel stupid.. I KNEW this was the 19th but I went school clothes/shoe shopping today because I was excited about payday and getting it over with… GRRRRR, lol !!!
WV has not scheduled a tax free day/weekend/week yet!
