Strawberry Freezer Jam Recipe
It wasn’t until I was in college that I tried freezer jam. Can you believe I had lived my entire life until then without any? Crazy. I would like to take a minute to thank my roommates, it was either Cami, or Chelsea who brought some from home and changed my bagel eating life. This was my staple meal while in school, a plain toasted bagel, with slightly melted plain cream cheese and piled with strawberry freezer jam.
When strawberries are in season you can pick some up for only $.99/lb. This is a great price to pick up extra and make a batch to stick in the freezer.
Don’t over smash them in the food processor. Just small pieces will work!
For every 2 pounds of strawberries mashed, I used 1 1/2 cups sugar and one packet freezer jam fruit pectin.
I got all the supplies from Walmart. I love the nifty little freezer jars they had, they made it easy and the kids could grab then since they are not made of glass.
If you have not had freezer jam on a bagel with cream cheese, do yourself a favor and make some this summer!
Strawberry Freezer Jam
Ingredients
- 4 cups crushed fresh strawberries
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 (1.75 ounce) package dry pectin
- 3/4 cup water
Directions
- Mix crushed strawberries with sugar, and let stand for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, stir the pectin into the water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, and boil for 1 minute. Stir the boiling water into the strawberries. Allow to stand for 3 minutes before pouring into jars or other storage containers.
- Place tops on the containers, and leave for 24 hours. Place into freezer, and store frozen until ready to use.

What a good idea! I will have to make some as I love bagels and strawberries. What kind of containers are you using and where did you get them? I like those. Are they plastic?

In these pictures I used the plastic “freezer” ones you can find in the canning section at Walmart.

May I make a suggestion that will make your jam even more out of this world? Add 1 tablespoon of balsamic vinegar to your strawberries when you mash them up. It won’t taste like vinegar, but it does something to the strawberries that make them taste like heaven!

That is a GREAT idea! I love balsamic vinegar esp on my strawberry salad! I never thought to add it to the jam!

We just did a batch of these, never having heard of freezer jam. Been quickly going through the first jar….tastes so good. I’m wondering if I goofed somewhere though. Is it supposed to be a little on the thin, runny side? I kept in freezer for 24 hours, then put in fridge. Are you supposed to keep the one you are eating in the fridge?
Tiffany says
I keep mine in the fridge all the time. I spread it on frozen… others keep it in the fridge, but I like mine frozen

I did this recipe twice and I can’t get it to jell…. I can’t figure out what I am doing wrong…I measured correctly, boil pectin hard for one minute, left on counter for 8 hours and then in refrig for 8 hours and then put in freezer…still did not jell up….I am going try one more time.. any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong???? should I leave on counter longer before I refrig it????

Oh gosh I am not sure! Are there directions on the box different then what i wrote? If there is maybe follow those… I have used jam that has not set as pancake syrup.
Yes freezer jam that did not set can be fixed. Take the whole batch of jam out of the containers, add more pectin, follow the directions on the pectin box, stir the hot pectin into the jam and place back in the containers.

Well this morning I made another batch….this time I used too much pectin….it was like carmel….when it hit the cold strawberries, it became clunckly….so, I poured into a pan, added 1/4 c water and boiled it for about five minutes to melt the pectin again….poured into the container and it jelled…oh, did it jell…ha ha….but, it tastes really good…strawberry banana….the other two recipes that didn’t jell will be used in yogurt and on pancakes….thanks for the help…
