Ok, so this ad for Kroger this week was a little boring… we can’t be mad, they just had 4 weeks of mega events. As I was walking through the store looking for unadvertised deals I kept noticing the price difference between the store and national brands. I thought it would be fun for my kids to do a taste test!
LET. ME. TELL. YOU… They LOVED it. If you are looking for something cheap and fun to do, set up some kind of taste test!
My almost 15 year old son was supposed to film it for me and I had 2 of my girls doing it, but the kids were all so curious and begging to do it that I had to add the rest of the kids. Then the 15 year old was so bummed that HE wasn’t getting to taste the food ( it was CEREAL people! you eat it everyday!) that I had to wait and have their father film it.
I swear I am doing this once a week, it kills about an hour and they had SO MUCH FUN!
We had all these products to test. For the video and because of time I only had them do Honey Nut Cheerios, Lucky Charms and Oreos.
I will say the results on one were what I expected. The other 2 were a little surprising! Watch the video and see if you can guess who was the winner on each one…

What so you buy that is generic? Are there products that you like better that are generic?

I don’t like to buy store brand oreos they don’t taste the same to me, the cereal it tastes the same to me. We don’t have an actual Kroger here but we do have an affiliate of theirs here. I haven’t really had any issues with any of the store brand products, but I will say that their White Cake Mix is the best! 🙂

I usally dont like store brand oreos either but I was making dirt dessert for my kids the other day so I bought wal mart store brand ones because they would just be crumbled and mixed with other stuff anyway but we had some left whole and I tried one it was a double stuffed one and it was really really good. If you never tried them before.
I’ll have to try the double stuffed ones, and good idea with using store brand for pie crust and crumbled up! 🙂 Thanks for the tip!
I buy store brand on a lot of stuff I would say the only things I can think of off the top of my head that I don’t buy store brand is Tea for us it has to be luzianne and cream cheese has to be pilly.
Kroger’s ad did stink this week (except for the free soap).
We buy what I can get cheapest. I really haven’t found anything Kroger brand that we don’t like! I have noticed they have added quite a few new store brand to their line up over the last few years.
I think my favorite store brand is safeway, unfornuatley I think it can sometimes be priced like a national brand. They have the best canned tunafish I have ever had, chunky. Target I think has the worst. Their tomatoe sauce is horrible, even if I add my own spices. So when its I can get it cheap I still wont buy it.

What a fun and fabulous idea! I am totally going to do this with my kids. I think they’ll love it. Store brand oreos are never very good, in my opinion. Same goes for graham crackers. Store brand cereal is usually pretty good, though. I wouldn’t say it’s better than the national brands, but still very good. Your kids are cute and they seem to have a great sense of humor. =)
The one thing I will not go generic on is chocolate sauce! It MUST be Hershey’s. There is no comparison!
I don’t usually do generics/store brand but wal mart’s version of Heinz 57 is better than the original and Kroger’s bran flakes I like better than anyone else’s and they go on sale sometimes making them an even better deal. Usually raisin bran is too sweet for me. I like raisins but not too many. Kroger’s bran flakes plus a little bit of raisins is perfect.

We love Kroger brand dry Italian dressing mix (even more than the national brands), also their four cheese mac n’ cheese is really good and only $.59 a box. At Safeway, their store brand chicken nuggets are so good but so expensive, so I stock up when their on sale. Also, we buy off brand Lucky charms anywhere they’re cheaper since my kids can never tell a difference.
I have to just say, before I started couponing I bought the store brand of EVERYTHING, so now my kids think some things that are national brand taste “funny” because they were so used to the generics!! Lol!
Just a little insider info…I used to work at Kroger’s and what a lot of people don’t know is some of the store brands can the name brand as well….like the sliced cheeses. Stores have a way of hooking up with name brands, legally, and putting their store wrapper on the name brand product. I don’t know all the details but the dairy manager told me…..interesting to see how many of the products are like that.

I never thought I would be angry at you, nor would I post my anger at you in a Public forum like this but….too bad at this point. You caused enough trouble in my afternoon yesterday!! You see, as I was laying in bed resting I saw your email about the taste testing. Excited, I clicked and started watching. As you introduced each child, I giggled, which piqued the hubby’s curiosity. As I watched the video, he was getting ready to go out and mow. All of a sudden he yells about me turning my iPad so he could see who the ‘cereal killer’ is. He laughed and I thought he was on his way out. I mean, he could care less about my couponing sites, binder, clipping, etc. but no! My hubby plopped down on the bed and WATCHED your video!! He & I loved every minute and your kids are awesome!
So what angered me? Well, the video ended and my Hubby yells, “Well go to their website, I want to see what products won! Don’t keep me hanging!”. Can you guess what ensued Tiffany? Me feverishly clicking, and searching, going back to the video….website, etc. NO RESULTS POSTED! My hubby was so disappointed, he went to mow. But before he walked out, he said that as soon as I find the results, I’m to go get him off the mower! Lol!
I am still laughing at him…But my dear Coupon Guru, please warn us that results would be posted ANOTHER day! Lol! Thanks for your great video! Although we have teens, they’re up for a Taste Test! Hopefully you post the results before they head on a week long missions trip Sunday morning! 🙂
