How To Grow Your Own Green Onions

This is a great tutorial from my good friend Becky, who also helps with the Giant Eagle matchups. I was VERY interested because we eat A LOT of green onions.

From Becky:

I love green onions but don’t buy them very often because they are pricey.  A few months ago, my daughter’s violin teacher told me how to grow my own which I had never thought about!

Grow your own green onions:

  • Save the root of some green onions you have bought from the store. That white part with the roots that you usually throw away. Just leave about 2-3 inches of white.
  • Stick them in a glass of water about 1-2 inches deep. And stick in a window where they can get some sun. As you can see above they will start to regrow!
  • Now just cut off what you need!

It is super easy–no dirt required.  I have done this several times, and get two or three times the original amount before I toss the ends and start fresh.

Thanks for posting this. I will for sure be trying this out because I LOVE Scallion Cream Cheese and dont make it often due to the cost of the scallions.
