If you are like me, you sign up for your utilities and never look again unless you are paying a bill. Did you know you can switch electric companies hassle free and save up to $500 a year?!

Last month we moved about 2 miles away. We had to switch utilities over to the new house and I was completely confused as to where to look, what I could switch to, what my options were and even what everything meant. I realized then I was probably overpaying because I choose to ignore how it all worked. I wanted information from a 3rd party, who wasn’t trying to sell me anything, and who was going to give me the info straight up and compare apples to apples.

Let me walk you through how to check YOUR electricity bill and see if you can save as much as $500 a year. It will take about 10 – 15 minutes, but that was the easiest money you might make all year!

First, don’t worry about it being a hassle. It is super easy just to check what you are paying and what you could be paying. You will need to grab a electric bill or pull your account up online.

If you are in Texas, did you know that online they actually have ALL YOUR (yes, yours personally) usage stats that we can pull really quick so you can get a super accurate look at EXACTLY the amount of electricity you use monthly? It is a pretty cool feature and I am going to show you how to do it.

:: Step 1 ::

Go HERE to CurrentChoice and type in your zip code to see your savings.

:: Step 2 ::

On the left side click “Get My Usage” this will take you to the page below.

Again, if you are in Texas this is where we will be able to pull your usage online. You are going to want to sign up with Smart Meter Texas. This is a FREE site that tracks usage and will automatically sync with CurrentChoice YOUR numbers so you can get the most accurate prices possible.

:: Step 3 ::

Please click here to create a Smart Meter Texas account.

• You will need to have a copy of your electric bill to get your meter number and electric service identifier (ESI ID) number.
• Smart Meter Texas will also ask you to create a User Id which can be your name or whatever you choose.
• Please be sure you receive a confirmation email from Smart Meter Texas after you sign up and follow their instructions. Then come back here to see your savings.

When you get your email,  follow these simple steps:

1) Click on the link in the email (or go to smartmetertexas.com),

2) Log into the site with your temporary password,

3) Change your password, and

4) Select a security question.

You now have a Smart Meter Texas online account. Go back to CurrentChoice and enter your user name and password into CurrentChoice.com.

CurrentChoice will take your user name and password and log into Smart Meter Texas and get YOUR past 12 months of usage.  Now CurrentChoice can use that information to show you YOUR costs and estimated savings for each plan.  Those estimates will include all costs including any low usage fees.

Ok, seems like a lot, but I promise it will take you about 10 minutes tops. Once you can see all the prices, pick the ones you want to compare and see what you are paying now, and how much you can SAVE! Choose a flat rate, variable, a 6 month or 12 month contract.

If you want to switch provider, you can do it all right there. No need to go to another site, you can even pick the day you want to switch on!!
