I ran into Kroger today while my girls were in dance class to kill some time. I grabbed a few things and caught this deal. The price of these Dole Mandarin oranges at my Walmart is $1.97, the Great Value brand is $1.88. This is one item I do NOT like the generic version of.
They are on sale at Kroger for $1.97. Plus, when you buy 4 you get a $.75/1 catalina back. Then after the sale along with the catalina I get a coupon for $1/5 Dole fruit cups again. The cool thing about this is that if I don’t make it back into Kroger I can use this catalina at Walmart.

Now onto my thoughts:
I want to point out something that I am seeing a lot of in my Kroger ads. If you look at the picture below you will see where it says, “additional $.50 off digital coupon available”.
This is NOT a good thing. Kroger is moving towards getting rid of paper coupons, they are going to be encouraging you to use their digital coupons and are going to phase out paper ones.
Why don’t I like digital coupons?
- There is not much variety
- You can only use 1 of any coupon
- You have to be at a computer to see what you have
- They are not for products that I normally buy

At first I was annoyed with the changes Kroger made, now I just pick up my Sunday paper and head over to Walmart. I realized I always left the 3 stores in my local area annoyed, they are dirty, employees are rude, and apparently untrained in any area! Not to mention at least one item on my every visit scanned wrong!
Happy couponing!

Thats why anymore I usually price match Krogers deals at Walmart..ever since they stopped double coupons..I price match at Walmart and til Dec. 23rd you can get a gas card for 10 cents off gas without having to earn the points with grocery spending. I didn’t use to like Walmart but now I find myself going there for almost everything. Also to let you know Tiffany, and readers I think maybe the Chronicle got the messege( with all the complaints last week) for the first time in a month my papers had all of the coupon sections in them…Way to go everyone! Lets hope it keeps up Thasnks again.

So good to know!

I agree! I am not a huge fan of digital coupons!! I forget what I have on the card and then after they swipe my card, I can’t use my paper coupons that I planned on using. Very frustrating and then I find out the digital coupons are less than the paper coupons.
I agree…. I head to Walmart!

I suppose they are nice for extremely busy people who would like to save a few cents but don’t want to get into the whole extreme couponing thing (i dont know why anyone WOULDN’T… but i guess there are people like that out there).
but since they dont control the coupon market–we do–if we all just don’t use them… and they’re a big flop… they could discontinue/not switch over to them.

I believe there is a great deal we as consumers can do. With facebook, and all the other internet websites, we can let our voices be heard about the digital coupons, and these changes all around. I do NOT like the digitals at all for exactly the same reasons Tiffany stated. Before they changed to their no doubling policy, I kept trying to go back to Kroger with my coupons, but realized that HEB and Walmart just save me more all around. The digital coupons work better for those people who walk around with expensive iPhones and blackberries and can look them up at the store, it’s just not working for me at all. I am done with Kroger.

I agree I stopped shopping at my City Market (krogers) about a month ago my local store changed their policy. The no longer double any coupons and only allow 3 of any kind of coupons per transaction 2 if their digital. Plus they only allow one transaction involving coupons per customer per day. Ridiculous in my opinion, so now I just price match everything much easier!
Amber R. says
I forgot to mention, that I think its ridiculous that all the krogers and affiliate stores that all us couponers shop at give us grief in some way or another. But yet when you watch Extreme Couponing quite frequently they shop at Krogers or krogers affiliates. Odd how they seem to find the one kroger thats coupon friendly and still doubles all coupons.

I went to kroger a few days ago and of all my digital coupons only one came off…store wouldnt do anything and i have yet to hear back from corporate..

I agree. I seldom go to Kroger (2blocks away) ever since they had “a great idea” to NOT double/triple coupons. I have also found better deals at the “only 99 cents” store….. like pepperoni for 99 cents, a better deal than Kroger, any day, with coupons.
Jodi B says
hmm pepperoni is only $1 at kroger right now.

There are a few Ecoupons that I don’t have paper coupons for like cereal. All the paper coupons I have are $1 off 3. The Ecoupons are for specific cereals and even if they don’t double, I am actually saving more because they are for individual boxes. Also, have you looked at the Kroger Ecoupons lately???? There are a lot of Kroger brand items that are available – like their lunch meat. It’s awesome because often their Kroger brand might be on sale, plus the Ecoupon makes it even better! Please look at the positives 🙂

I haven’t gone to Kroger since they stopped doubling coupons here in Houston. I had done a price book and found that HEB was cheaper than Kroger anyway, even WITH double coupons. I think the only way to get them to do anything is to hit them in their pocketbook, by NOT shopping with them. If enough people do that, perhaps they’ll rethink all their “great ideas” about not doubling and switching to online coupons. (According to my price books, Target and Walmart are cheaper than HEB or Kroger anyway! I shop at Target all the time now)

Plus with the daily Ecoupon on Kroger’s website, they are a higher value than the paper coupons. $2 off Charmin – you can’t beat that!!

I loved my Kroger (Louetta and Grant in Cypress)……it was my favorite place to shop before they did away with the doubling/tripling coupons. I do still shop there but am more selective about what I purchase. I do NOT like the digital coupon method but have used it occasionally.
Unfortunately for those of us who like the old timey method of couponing, lol, the trend AWAY from paper coupons will continue to grow as companies try to exert more control over it. Younger shoppers will be more likely to embrace the technology and as we know, that is the demographic that marketers cater to.
Kelli says
I think we all can do something about it. Shop somewhere else. I know there are some people that are limited to the stores in their area, but the ones of us who have more choices need to shop at another store.

Tiffany, on the show extreme couponing how do they get away with unlimited doubles/ triples? And the show must not film in Texas bc all kroger and kroger affiliates here don’t double/ triple. And yet the show, keeps showing us how ” coupon friendly” kroger is with their customers….on the show it seems like all coupons multiply and give overage at kroger..as many as 30-40 of same coupon. What’s up with that? We all know kroger doesn’t really like couponers….

The krogers in other parts of the country have different policies than us. They are able to double and triple unlimited coupons.
Jan says
Since the double and triple stopped, I rarely go to Kroger. The Kroger on Research is only blocks from me, so I will go when I just need milk or bread. I always use Uscan and the woman who works during the day has gotten so rude to me, I’m about to ask what I ever did to her! I hate to complain to corporate, but that’s where it’s heading. Also, the manager at that store always said hello when I shopped there months ago – now he also ignores me.
Lisa says
FYI, you can print a list of your ecoupons on the Kroger website. I don’t like the ecoupons either, but I do use a few. I only load the ones that are $1 or more, or that are for Kroger brand items or produce. Sometimes they do not automatically deduct, but I take my printed list to Customer Service and they have always given me a refund.
It aggravates me to repeatedly read that Kroger is making record profits, when we keep hearing about the shrinking profit margins on groceries. How is that happening, if they are not overcharging us?
joy says
I download the digital coupons from the Kroger site. If I have paper coupons I hand them over first then I let them scan my card. That way I use the paper coupons because they are usually better value. Then if anything else qualifies it comes off.
lisa says
Does anyone know how kroger is doing financially. Most people I know stopped shopping there since April. I wonder if business has dropped for them. Why, oh why don’t they listen to their customers.
Jan says
There’s a lady that I am friendly with who works at the Kroger nearest me. She tells me that the manager is saying that the store is making a lot more money now since the double and triple has stopped. I have seen prices at Kroger go way up since April. I believe that’s the reason for the increase in profits. The store is never busy, but Heb is always packed. That’s where I do most of my shopping now. You can never find a decent parking spot and can hardly push a basket down the aisle.
Trina says
Firstly.. I was able to get 3 different catalinas from the 4 packages of Dole I purchased yesterday at the Kroger nearest me (.75/1 Pineapple in lime gel package, .50/2 Any Fruit bowl, and 1.50/3 Apple Pear Fruit Crisps). I purchased 2 fruit cups and 2 fruit crisp packages.
I personally prefer Kroger to other grocery stores, but my thinking is beginning to change because of a recent experience I had. During my shopping trip last week, I was informed at check-out that Kroger was no longer accepting printed coupons because too many people have been copying them. I tried explaining to the cashier how printed coupons are, but did not have time to speak to a manager. I have sent an email to the Kroger company asking for clarification, but have not yet received a response.
As far as the digital coupons, they have pros and cons. I do use them on items that I did not get a coupon for or that I have few coupons for on items that I know I will be purchasing or on Kroger/Private Selection brand items… and because I am sometimes overly organized, I keep a running excel list of every coupon that I have so it makes it easier for me to know if I have a coupon for that item instead of thumbing through my coupon book constantly while in the store or going through the ads. When I have a coupon on my Kroger card, I just mark “KC” beside that item, and I know it’s on my kroger card.
