You will not ever hear me complain about another company as much as I will about the Houston Chronicle, I violently HATE them. I am not joking. BUT, I have no choice as to purchase their paper as they are the only one in my area. I have tried for a year to work out a deal with them to get you guys more papers, at a better price, I gave up for a while and my friend Valerie took over! Valerie was able to secure the latest deal from them, but of course as typical of the Chron, there have been some problems…
I wanted to update you as to where we are with them and how you can make your experience better when ordering, because it is A GOOD DEAL.
First of all, the deal is as follows.
If you were told that you could order up to 9, you did, and it worked, AWESOME! We just set a number at 5 but some have paid for up to 9 and if you paid for them, then you should be receiving them. This part sounds like a “if you were lucky and wanted” kind of deal, and if that was you, I am happy it worked for you. Also, some have gotten one of there subscription for the whole week instead of just Sunday. Again, I did not negotiate this part, but if they said you would, and you paid for it, that is great and I am happy for you.

Well, they do take advantage of being a monopoly and the only really large paper in most, if not all, of South TX. I’m sorry so many are having trouble:(
I am an exception in that I called the 713# for the $1 Sunday only deal, when the lady told me there was a special going on for 50cent Sunday only papers. I was thrilled and asked if I could have 4 delivered. She said she needed to ask her supervisor and I was indeed able to get four Sunday papers by paying the whole year up front. I look forward to getting my 4 papers off the driveway every Sunday before going to church:)

I called as soon as it was posted last week and ordered 3 additional papers. No problem with the ordertaker – he was great. I went over they would charge my card $78 for 3, 1-yr subscriptions. I actually had all 3 papers delivered today, but my card was only charged $26. I called cstmr svc and was also informed that “they” shouldn’t have done this. But she went ahead and charged me the remaining amount. I don’t want to not be able to get this deal in November when the $26 would’ve run out!

Yes, just call and have them redeliver or credit you. If it happens again make sure to call Sunday morning and they will redeliver right away.

So here is my conclusion:
I called the 855# back and was told they cannot help me and I would have to call customer service 713#. I called customer services and was told the reason why I didn’t get the 4 newspapers and was only charged $26 was that, you can only get 1 subscription at $0.50/wk and any additional ones would be $1.50/wk. Aaww, the aggravation! I just kept the 1 subscription, since they had already billed my account $26 for it.

They would only give me 1 subscription for .50 and told me they would charge more for the others…such a pain…but I will take the one subscription at the great price 🙂

OMG! Bless Osman’s heart! He didn’t have a clue. I couldn’t understand him, although he was American, and he finally explained he usually called people to get them to subscribe, not the other way around. Anyway, I THINK I’m supposed to receive 5 papers/week, and yes, according to him, they do ship up here to Fort Worth.
Sorry – but Walmart is still a zillion times worse! ;o)

Having worked at the Comical… er, Chronicle, in Subscriber Services for years, I can personally attest that the reps downtown are the absolute positive LAST to know about any deals.
@Holley – what area are you in? In the past (I’ve been gone for about 6 years now) we delivered all the way up to Louisiana.
@Alisha – all I can suggest to do is call. You definitely won’t be guaranteed a 6:30am delivery, but you might at least be able to get it same day.
To everyone else, please please please don’t be rude to the CSR’s. They’re doing what they’re told. I don’t know how many times I left work in tears because I was called a b***h, w***e, or s**t during separate calls. Sometimes I was told I was going straight to hell for working for such a liberal paper. I left because I would’ve gotten treated better as a prostitute and I stand by that thought today. If you’re calm, the reps are more likely to work with you and ask their team leaders and/or supervisors about the situation. I wish I had a dime for every time I was told that I couldn’t offer or give what the customer had been offered. I’d be rich! (remember I worked there for 4 years and took hundreds of calls a day) It’s not the rep’s fault they weren’t informed of deals and it’s the bane of the rep’s existence because they don’t find out until there’s been so many calls they’re convinced a scammer is on the loose (which has happened countless times too).

I am so upset! I ordered 4 papers last week and everything went very well and the gentleman that I spoke with was very nice. I go and look at my account to see that they only charged me for one and when I called this morning the operator just told me that they can only do one per year and I had to call customer service. I told her no that I they are not handling this issue and then she proceeds to talk to me like I am totally stupid.

OH MY GOD!!!! So I check my account today only to find that I was charged for 1 subscription. I called the 855 number to see if there was a mishap with my subscription. I was directed to 713-220-7211 because I was told that 855 only deals with signing up subscriptions. Although I knew what would happen, I called the 713 anyway and was told that I could sign up for 5 subscription but that I could only get the .50 rate for the 1st paper. I then called the 855 number for clarification. I was told that they are a 3rd party source and whatever the 713 said is the correct information. They only input information for the Houston Chronicle, who in turn actually processes the order. I’m furious!!

I was originally charged for 1 subscription (I ordered 5) and then the next day came through the other 4. Not sure why it came through that way, but I had no problem receiving my papers so far.

problem – ordered 5 papers on Monday and saw on my credit card bill only a $26 charge. Called the 855 number and she said she couldn’t fix it there I would have to call 713 220 7211 and she says as per management I am only allowed one paper on this deal. Did things change?

I went to my Kroger (Kingwood) and there was a Houston Chronicle guy there selling subscriptions. I asked him about JUST sunday papers and he said I could get JUST sunday papers for .50 cents a paper up to 5 of them. I guess the Houston Chronicle is trying to make this their latest advertising special?

update – I called back the 855 number as you said and they added 4 more subscriptions to the “one” I was only allowed according to the 713 number. Just checked my visa card and I was charged for 4 more issues so here’s hoping that all 5 make it tomorrow.

Ugh. I paid for 4… got charged for it… got all 4 the first week, then last week I got no papers at all. I called the 855 number and they told me I can only get one so they are supposedly refunding the other 3. Is there someone special I should speak to to get this worked out so I can get more than one at the 50 cent price?

Just answered my own question. The 855# is no longer in service. 🙁
