Reader Amber D. sent me in these pictures of her local $.99 store and Dollar Tree. She found Breyers and Klondike items for almost half of what they are in the Grocery stores. Also, below at the $.99 store she found packages of Hanes socks for only $.99. These are normally $6-$7 at Walmart.
I forget all the time to stop by my local $1 stores. I am not sure why, there are so many good deals to be had there. Recently, I had to purchase a bunch of end of the year items for the school I work at, I bought almost all of it at Walmart (assuming that was the cheapest) and ran into the $1 store to grab one last thing. Imagine my surprise whenI found everything I had bought at Walmart MUCH cheaper!
I think some of the stigma or reasons why I forget to go in is because they don’t always have the same items, some of the stores can be dirty, and there is not much customer service.
On the other hand…. I have gotten a BAG of avocados for only $.99, backpacks for my family reunion, supplies for Haiti, and name brand medication for next to nothing!

One thing to remember about shopping at the discount stores is to *always* check the dates on anything perishable. For example, when I was buying yogurt regularly for my husband, I could get it with two to three weeks before the sell-by date at the regular grocery store, but only 3-5 *days* at the discount store. Otherwise, the 99 Cents Only store is my favorite dollar store, and I really should stop in there more often. Thanks. ๐
As for deals I found there: my favorite so far is the sunglasses – I got three pair of sunglasses for $.99 each. I did sit there and try on a bunch of different glasses because some of them (being cheap glasses) had barely-noticeable warped lenses – but it was well worth the time. ๐ I also saw cute scarfs for $1 each, but I never went back to pick some out. That’s also where I go when I need an extra newspaper, because they sell the Sunday Chronicle for only $1.50. Candy bars are only $.50, but they don’t take coupons, so I usually wait for a good sale at Walgreens for those. ๐
You can always find different deals at the 99 cent store. I really like going their. But nothing beats couponing. Nex to nothing.
My 99 cent and dollar tree stores carry fresh produce and also deli products. Sometimes they even have bacon and prosciutto. I befriended some of the cashiers and they told me that they get new shipments on fridays, so that is when I get there early for the best deals. Their frozen department carries frozen fruit like mixed berries that I use for smoothies and frozen snap peas for asian dishes. I go there at least once a week to stock up..
Can you use coupons at the dollar tree?
thanks Love your page
I believe that Dollar General does accept coupons and Dollar Tree does not.
They do accept them. SOmetimes I see them in the inserts, things like spend $25 get $5 off
I used those nivea coupons at the Dollar General and received $1 overage!
Sunday paper is 1.50!
