It can be confusing in the beginning learning the difference between a “purchase” and a “transaction”. But there is a BIG difference and an important one.
Many coupons say “1 per purchase” and people mistakingly think that means you can only use 1 coupon of that kind in a transaction. If that were the case, well, that would really stink!
Each item that you purchase is a single purchase. The wording on a coupon that says “one per purchase” is letting you know that you can use 1 coupon per item purchased or you can’t use more than one manufacturer’s coupon on the same, singular item. Meaning that a $1/3 (or $1 off 3 items) you can ONLY use that 1 coupon for 3 items purchased.
However, there are times that you can use more than 1 coupon on an item, even when it says “one coupon per purchase”. That is when you are combining a “store” coupon and a “manufacturer” coupon on a single item. Examples of these are usually Target or Walgreens store coupons.
Now, if a coupon says, “one coupon per transaction” a transaction is your entire order. So, only 1 like coupon would be allowed no matter how many of those items you are purchasing. I have not ever seen one of these that I can think of, I have seen offers like “one per customer”.
Clear as mud?
I just wanted to make sure that you were aware that there is a difference and that if you are using more than 1 coupon and buying the same number of items as coupons that you have you are not doing anything wrong!

the ‘one per transaction’ was on the Allegra Allergy coupon from the paper as well as the coupon from the Target website

I went to Walmart today with the Nivea coupons and they made me do all 4 in different transactions. Ugh! I had my son who lost interest after the first transaction and so did the cashier :(. I haven’t been having great luck there but that was more then I could take.

What I want to know is why dont all the newspapers have the same coupons.. was waiting for the Sunday paper to get the Johnson and Johnson and the Allergra coupon that I saw here and on other site telling about the deals.. Montgomery Alabama had none of those at all.. Guess I will have to order inserts from other states or something..Couponing is getting big here and alot of stores are cutting back on letting you use them. I usually dont get all the great deals like others get but I am trying to cut my cost like today although I spent 70.00 in Walmart, I did use 26.00 woth of coupons..

that $5/1 similac coupon from a couple weeks ago is “one per trans”. and to beat all, the walmart i checked didn’t have any products for under $5. so that was a total money loser for me. but, i’ll still buy my ten bottles for less than a buck each and donate them. it’s going to be a great deal for someone!
Tiffany says
IT really is, that is a good idea!

Had an issue with this at Dollar General today for the lysol. Ughh…irritating. I just finally told her, take the other one off then. Geez, I was only getting 2!!!! I am going to contact corporate. I dont know why she was upset, it wasn’t like their store would not be reimbursed for it.

Thanks for clearing this up for me. I have a coupon for bacon and on it says “one coupon or offer per transaction” and wasn’t sure if that meant per item’s transaction or my entire purchase as a whole.
