This girl is AWESOME! She has the best sense of humor you can ever imagine from a kid. Plus, she “gets it” one of those people who just get life. You don’t have to explain anything twice to her. Street smart AND book smart all in one!
Yesterday she hands me signups and paper work from school begging for money again for something. I read through and see that we need to buy tickets to an upcoming program. The next part is something that MAKES me CRAZY…. they want us to purchase our kids craft projects. Aren’t we already paying for the supplies anyway? Whatever happened to bringing your art work home and hanging it on the fridge, now I have to pay for it if I want it. This time they wanted me to buy an ornament that they made for $5. We were going to the function and I didn’t want the kids to be sad that I didn’t want their amazing craft project. So,ย I wrote out a check for the entrance fee, plus another $15 for the 3 kids I have at this school, so we can take home the ornaments that they made. I handed her a check to stick in her backpack and wondered why no one told me how much it costs to have kids ๐
Tonight at dinner she turns to me…
“Mom, do you know what the dumbest thing EVER is?”
Laughing, my husband and I look at her and say, “No. Tell us what is really dumb?”
“We made these really dumb ornaments at school the other day, and they want you to BUY them!” she says shaking her head and laughing.
“WHAT? I bought one!”
“You did, why would you do that?” she asks.
“You wanted me to, it was on the sheet you gave me yesterday. I wrote the check and gave it to you!” I explain.
“Oh, MOM! Are you kidding me? It was pipe cleaners, and it looked like a porcupine! We have all the stuff here to make one, I could go to Walmart and spend $5 and get enough stuff to make like 500 of them! It is such a RIP OFF, I can’t believe you PAID for that. What a waste of money.”
She walked away shaking her head at me.ย
That, is why I LIKE that girl!

I put this up there with the day care center that my grandchild was going to when she was only 3-5mos and they had them selling (really the parents) candles as a fund raiser!
Glad to know that your daughter is sensible. Really enjoy reading this family story.

Smart cookie there! I love how, as moms, we often obsess over hurting our kids’ feelings in some way, when they know what’s up ๐

Shouldn’t it be “you’re?” Just sayin’……

Yep it probably should be.

Oh this makes me laugh as I JUST sent my Kindergarten off to school with $6 so she could make us a present for Christmas *eyeroll*. I remember my mom being asked to send egg cartons for the same purpose when I was in school. As my husband says “It’s easier this way.” Several years from now I fully expect to be sending my youngest with money for the teacher to buy us a gift card since “It’s easier this way.”

Love her. Good job mom and dad.

I remember the year my son went to SKR and around Christmastime they made ceramic ornaments and I felt the fury too as I forked over the $ to pay for it. Ceramic is a bit nicer than pipe cleaners, but still I’m with ya on this!

Love it!!!!

This is hilarious! You’ve obviously trained her well about the value of a dollar!

Too funny! I am a teacher and I wouldn’t have the face to ask the parents for $5 for that! Other than field trips, the max I ask is $3 for our parties which includes drinks, nachos, pizza, cup cakes, plates, napkins, and sporks for the kids and parents.

She is so funny! Very bright! Does anyone else have to take out a small loan at the beginning of school for pictures, fundraisers, yearbooks, supplies, choir uniform & t-shirt fees, PE uniform fees, etc? Makes me sick though that I am continually hit up for money from school. Especially if your child is taking any sports or in a music program. My daughter is in choir and we are hit up almost weekly about something else they have a fee for. Frankly I wish the schools had an account that I could just pay into monthly that all the expenses come out of. I agree, why did I not know my kids would be this expensive!
Anna says
hahahaha I can just picture that whole scene. “What? You paid for that?”
