Christmas Shopping Already?

Some of the deals lately have made me start paying attention to my Christmas list this year. I wanted to quickly toss a few ideas out there to you and ask for some ideas that you might have.
I Christmas shop almost year round. If I find a KILLER deal on something that I just can’t pass up in June I will grab it and out it away for December. Starting about now, I really buckle down and start planning.
Last year we spent about $800 TOTAL on all 6 kids and the gifts my my husband and I gave each other. To me this doesn’t seem like very much for that amount of people. I also need to say that my kids got NICE gifts. I really hate cheap toys and toys that just take up space ( we don’t have much) so I prefer less toys and things and more quality.
Out of the $800, only about $350 was cash out of my pocket, the rest was from me cashing in Swagbucks as Amazon gift cards and other online rewards programs like Shop at Home and Ebates etc.
These are the things that I think about and pay attention to:
Make a plan. Know what and how many gifts you are buying.
Know who you are buying for.
Start cashing in Swagbucks and other Rewards. (some take a long time to get)
Set a budget and STICK to it.
Find a safe place to store gifts where the kids don’t find them.
It is easy when you start far out like this to overbuy! That is why you have to be disciplined, have a list and a budget. In the frenzy of other shoppers in December, panic can set in that you need to keep buying although you have thought you were done. I have felt this way so many times and try really hard to avoid places where I feel like I need to keep buying.
I like to start early so that I can get the best deals, and BE DONE early. I love to spend December celebrating the season with my family and not shopping. I have in the past, made my husband and children miserable by killing ourselves running around everywhere right up until Christmas Eve. I just decided I wasn’t going to do it anymore.
How do you Christmas Shop? What are your tips?
How we found Ben’s Hat
By Tiffany By clicking on our links, we might make a SMALL commission - Thanks for the support! See our full DISCLOSURE here.
I am not even sure how to start this post?
This is one of those things where you say, “you just had to be there!”
But, I am going to try and explain exactly why my 13 year old son and I wet our pants in Taco Bell a few weeks ago.
As you know my son plays baseball spring and fall. Part of the baseball ritual is the hat. You get your hat, then the team Mom spends the next week trying to get in some place to get each child’s name embroidered on the back. Because, boys are slobs and forgetful and can’t manage to not get their hat mixed up with the other 12 in the dug out that look EXACTLY alike.
Go figure.
My husband coaches and likes to give the boys nicknames. A few seasons ago he started calling one of the boys ( real name Ben ) HOSS. He had a college buddy who they called Hoss, really nice guy and this kid just fit the same mold. I am sure you remember the T.V. show Bonanza? Hey, I just saw the re-runs!
Anyway, Ben always has Hoss put on the back of his hat. This last spring we were the Marlins, and at the beginning of the season a few of the families met at Rico’s for dinner one night after practice. Ben walked out of the restaurant and left his hat. His Mother was furious, they went back and kept checking but no one ever found it. Ben spent all season with no matching hat.
Fast forward 6 MONTHS! We were sitting in Taco Bell one night last week, when Tucker grabs my arm and furiously whispers,
“Mom! Thats Ben’s hat!”
I looked around and was confused for a minute, as I also have a brother named Ben.
Then I saw it….
A man standing at the register ordering food was wearing Ben’s Marlines hat with his name on the back!!
Tucker and I just busted into laughter. My husband turned to see what we were laughing at and actually gasped. He a little too loud, says, ” no freaking way!!”
The three of us have tears running down our cheeks, we are laughing so hard. Then my husband says, “we have to show Ben.”
Tucker and I are a little more reserved than my husband, we think he is going to take the hat back. We start freaking out and begging him to not ask for the hat back, he shakes us off and walks right up behind the man at the counter and TAKES A PICTURE!
The kids and I are dying, we are hiding behind and under the table’s at Taco Bell! All the while still laughing at how hilarious the situation was! Plus, just incredulous that Paul would just walk up and take a picture standing right behind the guy!
Paul, not being shy, much to Tucker’s horror, then asked the man if he could take his picture so he could have a picture of the front of the hat. The man was completely happy to pose!
This is about the point that neither Tucker or I could take it anymore, and both raced to the bathroom as I think we both were going to pee our pants!
We must have laughed for 3 days straight, every time I event think about it now I giggle. We sent the pictures to Ben’s Mom and called her, when she opened the email I could hear her scream with laughter a few feet away over Paul’s phone.
What we are really wondering is what is the degree of separation between a pretty nice Mexican Restaurant, Rico’s, and Taco Bell?
We want to leave something else there and see where it turns up months later!

Recipe for Homemade Pretzels

Christmas came early in the MyLitter household! Last week my Mother and my lovely Sister decided to do a mixer comparison. My Mom has had a Kitchenetix machine for many years, she just got a Bosch. I have a fabulous Kitchen Aid that my MIL got me many years ago, but it was and still is, top of the line.
My Sister borrowed my Kitchen Aid and took off to my Moms house. They set all three mixers up and tested all kinds of things, like whisking egg whites, cream and finally they decided to make 22 loaves of homemade bread. They wanted to see which was the best mixer.
When the mixer left my house, it was in perfect working order. I sent the one regular attachment with it and was hoping they would clean it up when it came back. I didn’t hear form anyone for a few days and finally my Dad came over to get his hair cut.
“Here’s you mixer back” he says.
I set it on the counter and notice a slight campfire smell. My Dad is a big time scouter so I just figured it was his clothes.
“Did you hear what happened to your mixer?”
“Ummmm, NO. Do Tell!” I say waiting for the news.
They (my Mother and Sister) were making the bread dough.
My Sister did not realize that there was a SEPARATE DOUGH HOOK for the mixer and that you don’t make bread dough with the paddle on LOW SPEED.
Needless to say, I no longer have a Kitchen Aid and my Mom’s kitchen that night was full of smoke! They killed my mixer!
But, I am happy to say that I am the proud new owner of a Bosch! The WORKHORSE of the kitchen!
MMUUUHHHH Hahahahahaha! It’s mine… alll mine!!!! All 800 watts of screaming mixer power! (Insert evil laugh!)
Thanks Mom and Dad! You guys rock! Thanks Anna for destroying my mixer so I got a new one… I’ll slip you that $50 later…
I had to test out my new mixer and my husband requested Homemade Pretzels, his favorite, so here you go…
In a small bowl, dissolve yeast and 1 teaspoon sugar in warm water. Let stand until creamy, about 10 minutes.
In a large bowl, mix together flour, 1/2 cup sugar, and salt. Make a well in the center; add the oil and yeast mixture. Mix and form into a dough. If the mixture is dry, add one or two tablespoons of water. Knead the dough until smooth, about 7 to 8 minutes. Lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough in the bowl and turn to coat with oil. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
My spiffy oven has a bread proof setting so I used that. Took a little less than an hour but doubled.
- Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C). In a large bowl, dissolve baking soda in hot water.
- When risen, turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and divide into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a rope and twist into a pretzel shape. Once all of the dough is all shaped, dip each pretzel into the baking soda solution and place on a greased baking sheet. Sprinkle with kosher salt.
Now is when you recruit the help. My Sister (who destroyed my Kitchen Aid) volunteered to teach the girls how to make a pretzel. Actually they taught her…
Bake in preheated oven for 8 minutes, until browned.
They turned out AMAZING! Can you smell them now? We took some and dipped them in the water/baking soda mixture, and added cinnamon and sugar to them and they were awesome also!
