Tiffany, I love your blog so please don’t take this the wrong way, but I had a suggestion for you. Adding it to a baby shower basket could be very incorrect. Any proud breastfeeding mom like me will be super offended. And this also has potential to jeopardize breastfeeding plans for any moms who are trying but aren’t sure about breastfeeding. When I had my baby I even refused the free formula samples from the doctor’s office.
As a proud breast-feeding mom of 6, this is a difficult one for me. I nursed all my babies but my last one, and could go on for hours about this one. Plus as a former lactation consultant I support breastfeeding 100%. I would never be super offended when given a gift even if personally I thought it wasn’t for me. I was unable to nurse my 7th and was broken hearted. For 6 babies I wanted a nice nursing cover instead of a blanket tossed over me. My last baby, a friend gave me a nursing cover. i bawled for days. How thoughtless of her! LOL!
See… that’s my point exactly… different people think differently on this issue and it is something that moms could be very sensitive about. So I wouldn’t include it in a gift basket unless I was really sure my friend will use it.
See and I think this is a VERY difficult issue that I try and stay away from because we all feel really strongly about it. I can understand what you are saying, I wont mention a gift basket again with it. We just can never know though who needs something and who doesn’t. I am sure my well meaning friend had no idea I wasn’t nursing. I would have never understood the “formula thing” if I had not had my last baby, I am really glad that I did so I was able to get a different perspective. It is a VERY sensitive topic, you are right, and we all want the best for our babies!
Hi Tiffany! Thanks so much for the gift basket idea. I don’t want to spend too much time on this topic as it is a little silly considering you just made a gift suggestion for a coupon, but I too exclusively nursed my first baby for a year and was so broken hearted when at 8 months I could no longer exclusively nurse my second. I was so grateful to have the support of other mothers that encouraged me to be happy with whatever feeding method that worked, I was also grateful I had hidden away the free formula the hospital had given me just in case. I believe as mommies we should all be supportive of whatever works best for each family. Sometimes that is formula and sometimes that is breastfeeding. Either way if getting a tub of formula in a gift basket is offensive just kindly say thank you and pass it on to a mommy or shelter that would use it. Discounted formula is a great thing and keep up the gift basket ideas pretty please….
Thank you Tiffany. Not everyone can breastfeed for different reasons like myself even if we wanted to, so thank you for thinking about us!
