Maycee,It does come with everything to get you started but if your kids are like mine they go through paper like crazy. I went ahead and ordered the extra paper and notebook because they were so cheap for refills when they used up the other paper. I am not sure why I says software sold separately because you get everything you need to start with it, I am wondering if that is for the extra programs like the music program you can buy separate??
