First, before you think “oh gross” or “my kids wouldn’t eat that” hear me out!
I am totally obsessed with fish tacos. I think it happened when I took a cooking class at the YMCA a few years ago and we made them there. That is when I used a grill pan for the first time and fell in love. Then I had fish tacos at Rockfish restaurant and now I order them all the time anywhere I can!
Yes, my kids eat them. How? Because I lie to them. I am not proud of it, but they eat fish without complaining. They think it is chicken. There I said it. 🙂
Funny thing is, they like it. As they get older and figure it out, they continue eating fish because they realize that it is good and good for you.
My favorite are grilled, with some kind of guac and corn tortillas. This recipe I am posting is one I have been using for about 6 months.
The total cost for this meal to feed 6 (or more) is under $10 depending on how much your avocados are that day. I always use tilapia and buy lots when it is on sale and freeze it.
Fish Tacos with Creamy Lime Guacamole Sauce (from Delish)
- 2 Hass avocados, halved, pitted, and peeled
- 1/4 cup(s) low-fat sour cream or Greek yogurt
- 1 small jalapeño, seeded and thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoon(s) minced red onion
- 2 tablespoon(s) chopped cilantro
- 5 tablespoon(s) fresh lime juice
- Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
- 1 small (4 cups) head of napa cabbage, shredded
- 2 tablespoon(s) vegetable oil, plus more for brushing
- 2 pound(s) thick red snapper fillets with skin, cut crosswise into 10 2-inch-wide strips
- 10 (7-inch) flour tortillas, warmed
- 2 medium tomatoes, thinly sliced
- Hot sauce, for serving
- Lime wedges, for serving
Directions
- Light a grill. In a medium bowl, mash the avocados, sour cream, jalapeño, red onion, cilantro, and 3 tablespoons of the lime juice. Season the guacamole with salt and pepper and press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole.
- In a large bowl, toss the cabbage with the 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil and the remaining 2 tablespoons of lime juice. Season with salt and pepper.
- Brush the fish with oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill over moderately high heat until lightly charred and cooked through, about 10 minutes. Transfer the fish to a platter and pull off the skin.
- To assemble each taco, spread a dollop of guacamole on a tortilla. Top with a piece of fish, a few tomato slices, and a large spoonful of the cabbage slaw. Serve with the hot sauce and lime wedges.

That is soooo funny, thats the same thing we did to our daughter everytime we gave her a different kind of meat we just called it chicken and she ate it, with no problem. So now that she’s 10 we have to remind her this is fish or beef or what ever it may be that we are serving. So she’ll say may i have some of that chicken fish.

This made me chuckle pretty hard. On the one hand I wish someone tried this on me because I only eat chicken and beef well-done, and nothing on the bone- too similar to real body parts, and it freaks & grosses me out. But on the other hand, when people dupe me with stuff like that- and it has happened a few times, I have either spat out the food, thrown up and always refused to eat anything else and never trusted anything else given to me because you never knew what was hidden in it. Skeptical child was I…
I really wish I wasn’t. I wish I liked all the food in the world and everything there was out there. I have worked hard to like some foods. Like vegetables, when I was younger, junior high, high school I would pick certain veggies out of everything. At some point I decided they are “just vegetables” and went out and started buying them and forcing myself to eat them over and over again, suffering through the gag reflexes until I could stand it. I learned to like olives in Greece. My whole family loves them, whereas I had always though they were nasty. The only vegetable I haven’t conquered yet is mushrooms. Can’t get over the whole fungus thing. Plus they either seem to feel like shoe leather, or slime in your mouth. Gross. Other than that I’ve won the vegetable battle. I don’t know if I will ever get over my meat issues though.
An old boy boyfriend had me on a 12 step program to get me to eat sushi- LOL- he made them with guacamole in the middle and some with fish sticks. LOL If I was a “good girl” and tried them, then he would let me have chicken nuggets with teryaki. It was the most hilarious and cute dinner I ever had. LOL And yes, I did eat it.

Don’t feel bad. We do the same thing. My 7 year old knows the difference now and was eating it without issue until we took her fishing last summer. Once she saw the fish caught and bleeding, well, she won’t touch it now. So… word of advice. Don’t take em fishing. 🙂

I’m just not a fish person (Go ahead and roll your eyes). So does tilapia have a fishy smell even after it’s been thawed? My older boys keep asking for fish tacos but I just can’t bring myself to buy fish.
Tiffany says
Lara, I think talipia is the most mild of all, I think that is why I ike it the most. I might have a little fishy smell, but not like some of the others 🙂
Lori says
I agree, tilapia would be the best to try. Least fishy smell and taste, inexpensive and easy to cook.

What’s a great price for tilapia?? And where do u usually find the best price?
Lori says
I usually buy the frozen tilapia, value bags, around 2 or 3 lbs. The fillets are individually wrapped so thaw what you need. I can’t remember store prices but Aldi seems to have the best prices with Walmart second. I buy it at Kroger too.

Tiffany, that is so funny! The first time I announced we were having fish tacos, my family flipped out…especially my husband who eats ANYTHING. They loved it! Kids were 3, 6, and 9…not an easy crowd. It is now one of their favorite meals. I love it because it is cheap and easy. Since they loved fish tacos, I was able to hook them (pun intended) on tilapia and swai as an entree. For tacos, I broil tilapia, brushed with little butter and sprinked with old bay. In tortillas, squirt of tarter sauce or little lite Mayo, chopped tilapia, shredded or chopped lettuce, shredded carrots, diced tomatoes if they like. Everyone builds theirs as they like. I NEVER have leftovers.
