This is a status update from a good friend of mine Charity. I was FLABBERGASTED and had to share what happened to her at Randalls bakery the other day!
* I will admit that Randall’s has awesome cakes, they taste amazing, but listen to this story….
From Charity:
“So evidently I need to be in the wedding cake business. The cake pictured here is a new cake featured at the Randalls bakery for $22.99. It’s called the Ombré Cake. In the display case there is an all-red cake and an all-blue cake. When I was ordering a cake for Noah’s party I pointed to the Ombré Cake and said that I wanted that cake but in white and without the swirly frosting, just very plain.
After several consultations with the bakery manager I was told that the same cake that is $22.99, if ordered in white frosting, will suddenly become $179.99 because it is now called a wedding cake. Are you kidding me?? I thought at first that they were joking, but alas, they were not. This may just be the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. And as you can see: we ordered the red/blue cake.”
I was just completely SHOCKED! Talk about taking advantage of someone planning a wedding!
What do you think?

I dont like too many crazy colors in my cake because it seems like it WILL wipe off on SOMETHING (like the table linens or something), so I like to get white as well. I dont see how anyone would want a cake THAT small anyways for a wedding cake!
Meghan says
That’s a shame. It’s also called bait & switch! Poor thing.
Denise says
That better be some crazy, fantastic white frosting! That is just horrible. My husband gets huffy for .40 for a slice of cheese for a hamburger at fast food restaurant. LOL. Seriously, I’m going to ask my Randalls bakery and see what they say. Maybe it’s a Woodland’s thing.
Tiffany says
She is south of Houston, so not a Woodlands thing!

I was thinking the same thing, I’m considering asking my Randall’s too out of curiosity. I honestly would call cooperate because the bakery manager seems crazy like she’s trying to inflate her department’s profit for the month to meet her goals. Did she ask for fondant icing? Unless it’s fondant, and even then, I don’t see this small cake being a wedding cake.
Charity says
Ladies, if you ask at your Randalls give us the update! I asked for plain, white frosting instead of red or blue frosting. Not fondant, just regular buttercream like the ready-made cake in the display was. So literally just white frosting instead of colored frosting. And you know they have gallons of it in the back! I asked the same question repeatedly because I thought they couldn’t possibly have understood me when the price jumped from $29.99 to $179.99…but they DID understand. White cake equals wedding cake equals enormous wedding markup price. So bizarre. I’m in southwest Houston and I’ve ordered cakes at my Randalls for 10 birthday parties/years in a row and this is the first time I’ve heard something so strange.
Jenny says
You’re post must have been “heard”…I just ordered this ombre cake and now you can do the all white icing cake.
karen says
That is quite the mark up. I know its all about the money but dang.

We don’t have a Randall’s here in Mission, Texas but that seems like highway robbery to me. You should be able to get whatever you want on your cake, you are paying for it. They are to ask you what you want on it. I am about to order my daughter’s birthday cake for this saturday and never have I been told that before. How in the world can that be considered a wedding cake? You should call their corporate office and see if that is actually a policy. I am curious so now I am going to ask my bakery if they have ever heard of that one. It’s a great cake, sorry you didn’t get what you wanted on it. Hope your child had a great birthday!
KC says
I’m just wondering how they call that an Ombre cake in the first place. Ombre is supposed to gradually go from light to dark of one color or slowly blend from one color into another. That is just a two tier two different color cake. Next time I’d call the GM over and ask for their help! No way would I pay for that cake in white at that price!
