As I read this comment from Julie, I think I blew my drink out my nose! I was not expecting to read “GOD of the Sam Walton family” for some reason that made me laugh, hard.
From Julie:
“What is going on at Walmart? I have my usual printable coupons, the young cashier girl that seemed to think she was the GOD of the Sam Walton family, said if it doesn’t scan I will not override it. A CSM did it after she took it to an “office” for approval. It was (1) $1.00 off coupon. I was then told if it doesn’t scan right, they can no longer take it. I feel at my wits end with Walmart and their inconsistent coupon and price matching policy. Oh and their lack of any type of customer service. I’m tempted to stick with HEB/Randalls/Kroger and Target to just avoid the Walmart Drama!!! Any one else?”
I can MORE than understand the frustration you can experience couponing and just trying to save a little money for your family. Really, it isn’t just at Walmart, it can be everywhere.
The problem is inconsistency from the cashiers. Which is a reflection of the training that they receive.
Now, in the Walmart coupon policy in this case, if a coupon beeps, they don’t have to take it. Not at all, they can just hand it back to you without any attempt to do anything. BUT ——> Coupons beep for different reasons. They might beep to ask the cashier to verify the amount of the coupon, in this case, they still take the coupon. It can beep though and tell the cashier to hand the coupon back to the customer. Not being there and the customer not being about to see what the register prompted the cashier to do who knows why Julie’s coupon beeped…
Yes, there is Walmart drama for sure! But sadly you will find Kroger drama, and Target drama, and HEB drama!
So what can you do?
- Start calling corporate each time there is a problem
- Talk to your store manager
- Find a different store
- Find a better cashier
PLEASE leave your suggestions in the comments. Sometimes none of that will work and you have to abandon your store. 🙁
Hang in there Julie!!!

So annoying! One time they said that my coupon would not scan and I asked if she could scan it one more time and when she did it worked.. I don’t know what is up with some of those cashiers! I don’t think they are aware of their coupon policies.

I’ve learned a new trick when this happens. I just take my coupon back, realizing the cashier is either under-trained or misinformed. Then after I pay, I walk to the csm or customer service desk with my receipts and coupons and ask why it didn’t work. I sweetly play dumb and say something like “I just want to know why this wasn’t accepted so that I can be better familiar with your policies in the future. Maybe I did something wrong?” Nine times out of ten, they tell me it was a system error and hand me a cash refund in exchange for the coupon. Having been a cashier before, I know that most of them would just push your coupon through if they weren’t afraid of being reprimanded. Usually the way you are treated at the register is indicative of how they’re being treated behind the scenes.

I had the identical encounter at Walmart. Unfortunately with poor economic times, coupon blogs and reality TV there are more people couponing and with that people who take advantage of the system. Stores are having to change their polices to handle that. Big Businesses like Walmart simply do not care about the consumer as evident by poor customer service that seems to permeate their stores. My rule of thumb, if my coupon is legit and I have escalated the problem as far as I can then I simply DON’t buy the item.

I just don’t shop at Wal-Mart unless I have to! Sure, they may be a few cents cheaper, but it is so not worth it! They make such a stink over coupons and price match! So I just shop at Kroger and Target and they never give me any problems with it at all!

I can SO RELATE!!! my mantra at walmart- i hatewalmartihatewalmart (deer park)- yet i go in there ALL THE TIME LOL i had one cashier REFUSE to accept the Kurig coupon for $5 off- just because it DID NOT HAVE MNFG COUPON on the top- it was not printed- at all — i did not cut it off by accident – believe it or not- THAT IS THE POLICY — WHAT? it was quite obvious it was cut out from the paper — red plum or smart source i don’t remember– BUT the Walmart off 1960 accepted one with NO PROBLEM! it really does depend on what Walmart- the manager ended up overriding her decision – but i have had issues with that cashier — to the point of her actually READING the coupons -looking at the numbers off the printed ones ect- i mean she took it to another level – i on the other hand LOVE My kroger (la porte) they are FANTASTIC – the manager even comes over and checks out my haul and savings! GOOD LUCK!

You are amazing, your comment cheered me up! This young girl must have been straight out of Walmart Academy Training. That is frustrating when, you’re spending over 100.00, you have one coupon, and you’re questionable. Although it occurred to me to report to cooperate, I felt it would fall on deaf ears. You’re right about the different department store drama, I felt at least other places I might have received some type of decent customer service. Again, thank you for responding back to me. We are neighbors and I happen to drift off to the Walmart at 242 against my husband’s wishes (not his favorite Walmart). 🙂

we have the same issue in southern OK. We were told that their computer would beep on printed q and therefore they didn’t have to take it. so guess what, they have lost lots of bussiness and the stock market is reflecting it. So take your bussiness somewhere else. Loss of income they undertand.

Funny you should mention WalMart and their coupon problem. The last time I went to WalMart it took me 10 minutes to check out and 20 minutes to wait for the cashier to scan the coupons. Granted, I did have $90 worth of coupons, but as the cashier scanned each coupon, there was a 5 of 6 second delay before the register would “take” the coupon and deduct the money off the bill. I have had other cashiers who would not wait and continue to scan coupons which made it very difficult for me to make sure the coupons were scanned. Now before I check out, I mentally add the amount of all my coupons so I know they were all scanned and came off my bill. I have had so many problems with WalMart and coupons that I am beginning to think they DONT WANT to take my coupons!!

Sadly, I agree with those who now avoid going to Wal-Mart unless absolutely necessary. I keep a Wal-Mart list of things I need from my Porter store. These are things that are cheap store brands that I will not ever get anywhere else & will not have coupons for. I only go there now about every other month or so. I have found it is easier & so much better for my blood pressure to just pay a little more (but, surprisingly not that much more) & just go to my Randall’s, Kroger & occasionally Aldis. I think Wal-Mart has gotten to big for their panties & needs to be brought down a few notches!

I have never had a problem with my walmart in Conroe. I have had problems with HEB and Target in Conroe, though. But here’s one thing that I do, I look for the same cashier. It usually works out that I shop on the same day she works. I’ve had other cashiers at Walmart to want to see the price matching ads, but this one cashier just told me “Honey, you call out the numbers and I’ll put it in.” As per Walmart’s policy, she doesn’t even require me to show her the ads. Believe me, when I’m price matching and have coupons, I hunt that woman down!

I shop at Walmart on 2920 in Spring every Sunday, they know me there. I price match and use coupons (been couponing for over 25 years)I have only had a couple of problems over the past almost 5 years since we have been back (military 23years Navy had us gone from the area) I talked to the managers and I have found out what they will accept and will not accept. If my coupons beep, then they put them to the side and key them in for me. If I have a problem I call the manager over and they usually tell the cashier, “she is one of our regular customers take care of her” People get annoyed being behind me and my husband, because I usually have so much price matching, but get over it people. One thing is you do not have to show your ads at Walmart to price match. One thing that I do to make it easier to price match is I write down my price matching items in a small notebook by each store them I star them as I get them and I always put my price matching items on the belt first.
