Breath. Breath. Breath. Do not kill the child. Breath.
In order to fit all the Christmas items in the playroom and around the house, I had to rearrange some things. I took some of the bulkier things out of the kids playroom and set them on the driveway up by the garage. We have a VERY long driveway. I asked my husband when he had time (later in the day) if he would please put it all in the garage for the remainder of December and I would pull it back out in January.
The next morning I asked my son to make sure that the trash was taken down to the curb as I could hear the garbage truck on the street behind us.
A little while later I hear….
“Mom, why is that woman taking our dollhouse?”
I run to the window just in time to see a woman slam shut the back of her truck loaded with all my kids playroom items! She drives off as I am trying to get the front door open and run to the street.
I instantly knew what had happened.
My son, who at 13 has become, let’s say fairly lazy lately, actually decided to go the extra mile and haul EVERYTHING on the driveway down to the curb! This woman probably drove by and thought, “Holy cow, what a bunch of great stuff, I can’t believe that someone would throw it away…” and loaded it up.
I am still sick to my stomach! Not only are all my storage drawers gone, but my girls wooden Melissa and Doug dollhouse castle, that they play with EVERY DAY, all day long, plus a number of other precious toys.
I really have not gotten an answer from him, as to why in the world he would EVER think we would throw away that stuff. I am new to this teenager stuff, maybe they really are brain dead?!
P.S. I paid way over $100 for the castle, it is currently $54 on Amazon today, I paid the $3.99 extra to have it here by Christmas. I am a sucker for 4 crying little girls! BTW my son offered me some money when he saw that I had ordered it. I have almost forgiven him ๐

Oh wow. I am speechless with horror at this story lol. Unbelievable! Good thing we love our kids so much haha
Staci says
I am so sorry. I would be sick to my stomach! I feel so bad for you.

OMG are you kidding me, I would be flipping my lid. I have a teenager too and I wonder some time. But what gets me is that lady just helping herself, just because its by the curb doesnt mean its free ay, you could be cleaning out the garage or whatever. I would never take something off the curb if it was totally new and in good shape. well actually I would never take anything unless the person who owned said it was OK. Plus here its illegal to mess with well trash which it wasnt in your case.
So sorry tiffany that stinks, isnt it weird how freak things happen to us with all our kids. I am always saying to them Are you kidding me, really, what the heck were you thinking.
my 12 year old I say this to all the time. He unloads the groceries from the car and leaves some bags with the gate open all night in the rain at that. WHAT? He says he forgot. I feel for you. At least you got a great deal on another one not that you needed another one until now ugh..
Tiffany says
Kim, that is funny, they just did the same thing also, left the cold groceries in the car and brought in the cereal… here in December it is still about 65 so not like milk is ok left out there!

Chant with me over and over again while doing some deep lamaze/yoga cleansing breaths. “The child is more important than the stuff. The child is more important than the stuff. The chld is more important than the stuff.” Every so often it helps so as not to completely freak out and go postal :). This is one of those moments you will laugh about 20 years from now and tell as a funny story when your child has become very successful. In the meantime, it’s ok to cry. I’m so sorry.

I have two teenage sons and yes they only ever seem to go the extra mile when they really shouldn’t. Glad you were able to replace the dollhouse. Hope you guys all have a Merry Christmas. ๐

The look of horror in my face while I read this… I’d be in a corner crying.

Only a fellow mom would understand what’s going on! I understand! I have 3 kids and they’re constantly up to something. This exact thing could have happened at my house! I wonder if at some point you’ll post that your kids are having a playdate at someone’s house and they see their doll house. I was remembering the baseball cap incident. Ha Ha! Despite this…Merry Christmas to your lovely family!
Tiffany says
Thank you! Merry Christmas to you also!

When my brother was 13 – he got a wild hair to take out the trash on his own and my older sister had put all of her clothes in big black bags because she was moving out. Well, he threw them ALL out with the trash! We have no idea what he was thinking – weren’t they a little heavy!? haha One of our great stories we love to tell now.
You could put an ‘Lost’ ad on Woodlands Online and let them know what happened. Maybe she’ll give the toys back if she realized it was an accident. I’ve seen stuff by the curb and went and asked the owner if they were in fact getting rid of it, and they let me take it. (it was a like new tricycle that had a broken wheel, but could easily be fixed).
Tiffany says
I was thinking of doing something like that. I don’t blame her, honestly we have stuck stuff on the curb in the past hoping someone would pick it up and not have to throw it away. She must have thought we were crazy! There was some good stuff! I am glad that she got it and that it didn’t get thrown away in the trash truck. That might have been worse! I am hoping some other little girls have a nice Christmas at this point!
** I am totally lying! I am still crying about it! Just trying to make myself fell better! LOL
Heather says
::gasp:: my heart just broke for you!!! I would blame the hubby. The teens braincells are still trying to click together. LOL. Cant blame him too much!
Tiffany says
The Hubby is too easy to blame and he gets it all the time, I am cutting him some slack on this one ๐ He was heartbroken also!
rebe says
That is kinda funny, could blame your husband for not getting it in the garage, the son for putting it on the streets but they will probably blame it all on you for not putting it up yourself. the blame can go all around. POOR GIRLS.. hopely they will like the new one even better.
HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR.

OH NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what a thing to happen!! I’m so sorry!!!! O.o Maybe the lady who got all your stuff will wander past your blog in cyber land and return it??!!
Jen R says
This is so timely. I was just complaining about my two sons (12 and 15) yesterday and have decided they live in the land known as OBLIVIDOM because they seem to be oblivious to such much around them. Apparently it’s not just my kids.

I have a thirteen-year-old son—and believe me, it’s not just yours!!
TanyaW says
OMG girl! I am sooooo sorry! I read with my mouth wide open in horror. Hopefully this will be a lesson learned to him and things will get better. But jeez, I might not have been as patient as you!
Lara says
I’m teaching in RS this Sunday–Pres. Monson’s talk “The Divine Gift of Gratitude.” But man, I’d have to do some serious repenting if it were me because I would be LIVID!
I really do hope some little girl somewhere appreciates her Christmas this year.
stephaanie says
Oh, my heart goes out to you! That made me gasp just reading it, not only because I could see my own 13 year old “being helpful” like that, but because no one in their right mind would believe that was trash. Or should I say, no ADULT in their right mind would – that woman drove off well aware that she was stealing ๐
shannon says
Wow.. what a story. You made someones day and hopefully they love the doll house as much as your children do! Merry Christmas.
Joy Brasington says
Tiffany, that almost happened to my neighbor. Their teenaged son was mowing the yard one morning this summer. He decides to take a break and leaves the mower right at the edge of the yard close to where the trash gets picked up. It was trash day and the trash guys had already been thru. I was sitting at my computer in the front of the house and noticed a garbage truck backing down our culdesac. Two guys got out and gently picked the mower up and started to place it in the truck. (they knew it wasn’t trash) I ran out the front door and screamed at them WAIT! I told them that was not trash and they quickly unloaded it and got the heck out of there. I called my neighbor and told her I just saved her lawnmower. They couldn’t believe it. They had bought it less than a year ago. She said she told her son not to leave it out there in the yard like that, but it fell on deaf ears. Sorry I wasn’t there to save yours that day.

That is a crazy story! No kidding, wish you were my neighbor!

Well even worse it could have been picked up by the garbage truck
