Kids Couponing? My daughter the coupon “princess!” LOL!
This is a segment my daughter filmed last week for KHOU Houston that aired Friday night. She is a little embarrassed that they called her a coupon princess, but she did a great job on her shopping trip!
Emma’s shopping trip cost her $8.36 and something total.
- The Chex was $.50 (she had coupon)
- The Gum was $1 each ( used in store coupon)
- The Candy was BOGO at $1.09 ( plus she had a coupon)
- The 3 Pantene was $3.89 for all 3 ( she had coupons)
- The Secret was $.78 (she had a coupon)
Emma saved over $18 with coupons and in-store promotions!

That was soooo cute. But, am I confused on the math? If the chex is $1 a box and the coupon is ‘save $0.50 wyb2′ wouldn’t that come to $0.75 a box and not $0.50? anyway, just wonderin’. she did great!
Tiffany says
It was $1/2 a box. I am not sure that the reporter saw the coupon.

That’s awesome! My girls (2 and 4) love to play coupons and ads. They enjoy helping me at the grocery store. My oldest sorts my pm items and regular items in the cart.. She does this when she plays grocery store as well. I love raising an awareness of saving money at such a young age. ๐

If only schools would teach a life class that includes this, how to handle credit cards, figure out interest, how to buy a car/house… Everyone would b more prepared. I teach my kidsthese strategies But no one taught me.

If your children were in developmentally delayed classes they would be taught that. A friends Son was DD as a child. His teacher would take the entire class to the grocery store hand them coupons, grocery list and money. They would have a calculator with them and would figure out if it was a better deal to buy store brand or the name brand with a coupon. This was part of their life skills classes every week. She had them grocery shop with her money using her list. They had to figure out which was the better deal and be prepared to tell the teacher why!
This should be taught to all students though not just those that are DD. She also taught them how to balance a check book as part of the life skills class. This was in 5th or 6th grade.

I agree mom3

I agree that it would be great if they would teach this to our kids. Teach different life aspects at different ages like our young elementary kids could learn about couponing, etc at same time as learning math. In Jr high, learn about saving/interest and in high school learn about credit cards, etc. I too, didn’t have anyone teach me and I’ve unfortunately had to learn the hard way. But I’m proud to say that my 8 yr old is already cost conscious and has reminded my mom several times to not ‘waste’ money on things she doesn’t need – candy, toys that my niece/nephew always ask for. I guess he does pay attention. 8)

You are so right, mom3! I wish someone had taught me what Tiffany has years ago! I am teaching my boys about coupons and frugal living so that one day they will make wise choices with their money.
