What exactly are Essential Oils that I keep hearing everyone talk about? I wanted to do a quick Essential Oils for Beginners just to get you started. I asked myself this question MANY times in the past few years. Little by little I started looking into them, and have never looked back!
I am going to answer very basically some of the questions I had that maybe some of you have. I am also going to do a few posts explaining how we use them in the next few days.
What are Essential Oils:
You know Essential Oils have been used for thousands of years, for health and even in cosmetics. They are making a BIG time come back because of recent studies showing they impact the body in a very positive way.
You want Essential Oils in the most pure form possible, never diluted. The plants are grown on farms all over the world and are harvested where they are sent to a steam distillation process. Then they go through cold pressing, this is what gets you the purest essential oils. Which has made them far more powerful than the botanicals from which they were extracted.
How do you use Essential Oils:
This is what I wanted to know the most. Ok they seem cool to me, but what do I DO with them??? There are quite a few ways to use them, and most can be used all different ways in different combinations and even combined with other oils.
Topically – This means you rub it on your skin. I typically rub it on the bottoms of my feet and my kids feet. I will rub Peppermint oil on my kids belly when they are not feeling good, or even rubbed Lavender on bruises to help them fade quicker. We have the Kids BugBite oil and that is rubbed directly on the bug bite.
Inhaled – You can rub a few drops in your hands and then cup your hands over your nose and breath in the oil.
Diffused – Using the diffuser in my starter kit, I diffuse oils all day. You add a few drops of oil to the water in the diffuser and we like to run ours on the intermittent setting 15 seconds on and 15 off. This nebulizes the oil and breaks up the particles so your body can put them to work. I wrote more about that HERE.
Internally – Essential Oils can be taken internally. I have only done this a few times and prefer topically, but MANY people take them internally. You add a few drops of oil to little capsules and you can swallow them just like a pill.
There are many more ways to use oils, like even to clean with, but I wanted to just highlight a few.
What is a “carrier oil” to dilute:
This was a question I had because I heard it a lot. Many of the oils are VERY strong. On the bottles it will tell you if you can use them directly or if you need to dilute with a “carrier” oil. You want to read this info especially if you use them on your kids. Carrier oils can be coconut oil, rose oil, almond oil, on and on… Look for an oil that has been cold pressed if possible. I buy mine directly from the company I buy my oils from. You just simply drop a few drops of carrier oil in your hand and drop a few drops of the essential oil with that and with my finger I mix them together. You can also make a larger amount in an empty bottle if you use it a lot. Some oils you can buy already mixed with a carrier oil, the kids oils I buy come this way.
This is a lot of info for one day, I will be back with some more tomorrow! This is the March special HERE you can read about.
