Instructions:
Begin by dividing your royal icing to color approximately half of it red. You’ll leave the rest white. When coloring the royal icing, use a small amount of gel coloring on a toothpick and stir well until the gel is completely mixed in. Add more food coloring a little to a time until the color is deep enough
Fill your piping bag with white royal icing. Carefully pipe a border for the top of the stocking on all the cookies.
In a small bowl, mix 1 cup of white icing with water to create the “flooding” icing. Our Royal Icing Recipe explains more about this.
Carefully “flood” each cookie top with the white icing.
While the icing is still wet, sprinkle with the sugar crystals.
After the white icing has dried, fill a piping bag with red icing and pipe a border around the rest of the cookie.
In a small bowl, mix 1 cup of red icing with water to create the “flooding” icing and cover the rest of each stocking.
When the red icing has dried, use your piping bag to add swirls of red to each cookie.
Make sure to let the cookies dry completely before stacking or plating.
