Anyone can sell stuff on Facebook. And there are many ways it can be done. There are multiple ways for people to do it for free and there are many apps for personal and business use that can be used for a price. Check out your How to Sell Things on Facebook guide below.
Before you list
- Take a good picture.
- Know what the value is. Though you can usually get a better price on Facebook than you would if holding your own garage sale, overpricing your items can be a good way to get no offers. Know the value of your used items.
- Have a good description ready. Be honest about the condition, note issues if there are any and take those problems into account when pricing.
Who can sell on Facebook?
Marketplace
There are many “Marketplace” apps and groups on Facebook. If you are looking for broad exposure with no cost for your items, these might be the way to go if you are willing to ship what you are selling.
The original Facebook Marketplace is now run by toGather at Oodle Marketplace. You can list and sell items with no fees. You will find everything from vehicles to household items to internet marketing pitches there. There are categories, but not everyone posts in the right spot so you get unrelated stuff in your browsing often
Local Garage Sale Groups
These have been popping up quickly and doing very well for buyers and sellers on Facebook. These groups are started by individuals and other than the satisfaction (and probably sometimes headache) of dealing with an online community, the group owners make nothing from running these groups.
The best way to find a group in your area is to log into Facebook and type “your city” garage sale or “your city” yard sale into the search bar. If there is one in your area it should come up and you can request to join it.
In these types of groups there are usually photo albums set up for item categories to help organize the items for sale. Items that are newly posted or commented on jump to the top of the group. Very large and busy groups can get cluttered fast and push items down quickly. Using the albums to browse and sell is usually the best way to go.
Make sure you read the rules of the group. Many of the groups require that you be willing to meet or deliver your item to the town the group is made for. Larger groups tend to have more rules since more people usually equals more issues to deal with. These groups often require a first come first served protocol and have rules for how long you need to wait before passing to the next person. There are usually rules about how often and how many items you can bump each day.
Service groups
If you like to write, there are groups where you can promote yourself and sell articles to bloggers and other online sites. Have a skill to sell or trade? Try searching for local barter and service groups. Most major cities have groups for these types of things and MUCH more.
Storefronts
Storefront apps are a great way to link your current online selling site to Facebook. However, they only show what you have for sale and will take people to your website to complete the sale. They do not complete the checkout from Facebook. That’s good in extra pageviews for your site, but some users prefer to stay on Facebook because they feel more secure there.
Big Commerce and Shop Tab are a couple Storefront apps to look into. There are monthly fees involved.
Selling Apps
These apps let you sell your items directly on Facebook. All three options listed below have FREE versions, but the functionality or quantity of items you are allowed to display will be limited unless you pay. These are great for small home businesses, companies that want to push top sellers and many others.
Wishpond and Beetailer are some well known selling apps to check out.
