Once Upon A Time, there was a Man and a Woman, who thought it would be a good idea to have 7 children (we really are, but for the purpose of this post I am being sarcastic ;0). But, in their bliss of raising these wonderful children they were not prepared to take into account a few things….
The time would soon come that they would outgrow their “starter” home (12 years later) and need to move to a larger house. As their luck would have it, their 1st home would sell quickly and their new home would not be ready for 2 months. “No problem” says the Man, we will just temporarily rent something until we can move into the new house. The Woman (because I get the fun jobs) looks and looks and looks for somewhere that will do a short term lease.
“Oh, you don’t lease to someone with 7 kids and a dog?”
“What if we lose the dog?” the Man says. Then the Woman kicks him.
“It is against the public housing act, to have 9 people in a 4 bedroom apartment?” The Woman exclaims as another options goes out the window. “What do families do that have to rent with a bunch of kids?!”
“You don’t do short term leases, ever?” She asks for the 23rd time.
The Woman is getting desperate. The Man however, sleeps soundly without a care in the world. “We have a tent” he says, then he goes back to playing basketball on the driveway with the kids.
The Woman is now envisioning staying at the Marriott for 2 months and ordering room service for every meal.
“What? I would need to get 2 rooms for that many people, what do you mean you don’t allow kids to sleep on the floor in sleeping bags for 2 months at the Marriott!”
Stay tuned….
P.S. You should see how fun it is to try and find a vehicle that seats more than 8! What were that Man and Woman thinking? ๐

Sorry you are having to deal with this. I’m sure it’s stressful. My friend actually had this same type of problem. They were able to work it out with the new owners of their house to rent from them (i.e. stay in their ‘old’ home for 2 more months). I know this is not always possible, but it worked for them.
What about an extended stay hotel-type? Some of the rooms are bigger, and include a living and kitchen area. Some have laundry facilities too. I know it’s not the optimal at all, but it’s generally cheaper over time than a regular hotel if it comes to that.

We did try to do it that way, but they would have been in the same situation… so they said no. ๐

We have friends moving here and they are renting a vacation condo in lake Conroe for a month until they find a house. Congrats on the new house BTW!
Tiffany says
Thats a really good idea Jentry. I just hate driving down every day here. We might need to look into that!

One of my coworkers has two properties in April Sound. I know they do short term stuff like this. The house in this link sleeps 12, and they have a smaller one too.

oh I feel for you. At least its only 2 months or so. I have been in this situation too more or less not exactly the same circumstances but we had to move from CA to PA to move in with our family and its been 2 YEARS now. thankfully there is an end to our plight though and we will be moving into our home by the spring. But–I have been through this and its crazy. yeah–no one will rent to you with this many kids(I have 6)…no one gives you a break…and hotel ppl won’t even let you stay in one room you need at least 2 rooms etc… I hope you find some sort of arrangement that works. I actually would think its fun to stay in a tent for a few weeks as long as the wheather is warm and no rain.

Well, either don’t tell them about the kids..its only two months…or send a couple to me and a couple to someone else…and a couple to someone else. ONLY KIDDING!!! Have you tried the local churches. They may have investors who have property they would lease short term. Will keep my ears open.

Well CONGRATS on the new house! It made me think, how sad will you be to leave your old house? I can’t imagine moving from our home because like you it was our “starter” home and then the market crashed & we’re still here starting our family! Also, how did you EVER keep your home clean enough to show with 7 kids! I couldn’t do it with just one…

That sucks, come stay with us. We don’t care if the kids sleep on the floor for 2 months. ๐ I hope you find something and soon! Love you guys!

I have actually looked for a vehicle that seats more than eight and to do that I had to leave one of my kids with a friend cause there wasn’t room in our 8 passenger van for her!! LOL! I hate my 12 passenger van but I love my kids so I guess I will live!! Good luck with all that stress! Been there and done that but at the time with 4 kids instead of the 7!

It is funny how men don’t seem to worry about these things, but it is only because they know the wife will take care of it so they don’t have to!
We, too, have grown out of our house. 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, 5 kids, another on the way… be happy yours sold so fast! Ours has been on the market since June, and we listed it $35,000 LESS then market value… and nothing. NOTHING is selling in Il, absolutely nothing! BUT we have a roof over our heads and that is what matters…
WAIT, don’t you have a REALLY nice sister that will take you all in? ;o)

Anna bailed on me for this one! She is having a baby in a few weeks…

THanks guys! I was just posting a funny story about the mess that we get ourselves in, I wasn’t expecting all the good advice and helpful emails! Thank you all so much!

My family was in this situation for a while. We ended up leaving our one child with his grandparents for a while so we could look for a place. Some nice friends put us up.
However, we nearly got in a long term hotel. It was just a tiny bit more than rent – they didn’t do room service every day, but it would have been fine. Don’t know how your family size affects that.
Melissa says
So if I understand you sold your house? Can you rent your own house back for two months? What area do you want to be in I am south in Pearland.

We went to Colorado 2 yrs ago and had to rent 2 hotel rooms because of the size of our family for 4 days while visiting family. It isn’t fun when you have to split up like that, but we survived. My sister has 8 kids and her husband transferred to Sugarland (years ago) and they had to rent 2 apartments with attached porches in order to board their big family while waiting for their house to be ready. Good luck. The blessings of having so many wonderful kiddos will be countless. ๐ Oh…and I drive a 15 passenger van to get my family around together. ๐
Lara says
So I’m guessing you can’t stay at your mom’s house? I’m glad you at least sold your old one. If you can’t find anything, we at least have a big enough backyard for you to set up tents. :o)
Anna says
Hey, I said you guys could stay with us. You just have to share a room with the squirrels… all 9 of you. And we’re not movin out of the master bedroom ๐

I wish you the best of luck on finding a place. That same thing happened to us, although we had to add my shoulder surgery into the mix at the very time that we had to move. Our new home wasn’t done yet, so we stayed with friends for a week. (Mostly my family stayed there while I was in the hospital for several days.) Just know that many of life’s changes are temporary–use this time as a “memory maker” and it makes the pain and inconvenience just a little more bearable. ๐
