Its been a little while since I have embarrassed myself/told you a family story…
Occasionally we are interviewed for different reasons by the media, usually they need a “family” to film and we try and pretend to be normal.
This past State of the Union Address, a local station needed a family to interview about our feelings about the Presidents address. They came out before it was on to get our opinion and ask us some questions. Paul and I enjoy politics, and follow closely so we were prepared to answer anything that they asked us. However, we quickly realized that they were not interested in a political story and a families opinion, but a family story about the state of the economy.
We played along and they asked to film us making dinner. No problem, I was making pulled pork sandwiches, one of the kids favorite and had everything ready to go.
Please tell me that I am not the only one who gets those little sugar ants in your house when it rains? EVERY TIME we get a bunch of rain, they end up finding their way into the house. It drive me nuts. Then I spend the next week trying to get rid of them.
So, I am working on shredding the meat and Paul starts slicing the rolls for dinner. The camera is rolling up close and in our faces while we are working on dinner. Paul desperately starts trying to get my attention and under his breath mutters, “Tiffany! There are ants on the rolls!!!!”
“You have GOT to be kidding me!” I whisper back. ” Just go with it, act like nothing is wrong!”
We continue to make dinner with the camera rolling on our every move and Paul brushes off the ants. We make the plates for the kids, and get them up to the table. We say prayer and try to quietly signal to the kids to wait to eat. The camera crew has been here forever and we are thinking they should leave at any minute.
My 9 year old daughter is NOT getting the sign language messages from us and sees the ants in her plate, she starts freaking out and LOUDLY yelling, “There are ANTS on my sandwich!”
Paul is trying to whisper to just be quiet and we will go out to eat as soon as they leave!
“Dad, there are ants, see right here!” she says. Then she starts counting them. “Mom look, 1, 2, 3, 4, I see 5 OF THEM!”
The cameras are now doing a close up of her counting abilities.
I am wishing a hole would open up in the floor and I could crawl into it. I am begging her to stop counting the ants on T.V. and explaining that we do not expect her to eat it, it is just for the filming and we are eating elsewhere. She finally gets it when her older sister hits her in the arm ( also all on T.V.) and tells her to “Shut Up” again on T.V.
AWESOME.
You might have seen us immediately after the State of the Union Address on Fox News, yes that was my daughter counting ants on her sandwich. Yes, we went out to eat that night, and yes, the song, ” The Ants Go Marching” has a new meaning for the Ivanovsky family!
**Thanks to Ginger we have VIDEO! You can’t see her counting the Ants in this one! Sooooo disappointing!
**Um, me again, and by the way….. I DID NOT say we were NOT going to watch it! I had just explained how we watch it with the older kids. They edit the way they want to!

Oh my goodness…Tiffany, you had me cracking up when I read this. You have a great sense of humor. I didn’t see your show on Fox News, but I sure wish I had. That’s one of those moments you’ll remember forever. It’ll make a great story for your grandchildren one day!

I’m a new reader here, just found your site a few weeks ago, and I have to say that I LOVE this story! It’s way too funny and I love that you dared to share it with all of us. Thank you for being real! And YES, we get those ants, too!

Oh boy did that give me a giggle… that is so some thing that would happen to use, except I would never in a million years want to be on TV! That’s like asking for something to go wrong… ha ha! ๐

Is there a link to the show so we can watch it!!!!
Jennifer says
I love stories like this because they make me feel better about the things that happen in our family! I think we have all had those pesky little ants:)

Tiffany, I’m fairly new in town…been in Houston for 1 1/2 years now and the ants have raided my pantry one too many times. I’ve thrown away more food than I care to say. Is it a Texas thing? Never had this problem up North.
Anna says
I think it’s a Texas thing. Two summers ago I had “crazY” ants invade my car-I wasn’t the only one either! When I googled it I found it was a Houston area problem. Don’t have sugar ants though.

I also am a Texas transplant from the north. I wanted to sell my house and move the first ant invasion! It’s definatly a “Texas Thing”.
