Oh dear, you are not going to believe this one. Well, if you have been reading for a while you actually might!
This is how it went down…
My kids have been sick for 10 days now and trapped in the house! I FORCED them out this afternoon to take the 2 older girls to softball. We packed up all the little kids scooters and planned on playing in the empty parking lot at the softball fields.
As soon as we pulled up, my eagle eyed children (also the same children who can hear you open a candy wrapper from a mile away) spotted a cat under the truck of the girls softball coach. There are ALWAYS stray cats at the fields.
They piled out and started calling for the cat. The cat sadly limped over to my kids, it was pathetic. Only trying to walk on 3 legs and clearly hurt. The kids all started crying, begging me to help it.
WHY ME!!!???
It’s 5pm. Rush hour traffic. I toss the kids and pathetic cat into the car and set off to find an open vet. Thinking to myself the entire time, “why am I spending money on a cat that is NOT mine!”
We find a clinic inside Pet Smart. Wait for an hour, and finally see the vet. After an exam, x-ray and antibiotic shot, the verdict is….
The cat has a broken TOE!
For crying out loud. So the kids are thrilled he isn’t going to die. The vet keeps commenting on how nice and clean and NOT pregnant this sweet cat is. Doesn’t even have fleas. Dang, looks like we have a new pet I am thinking. I have to keep the cat immobile for 2 weeks and then come back to the vet to see how it has healed.
We get home, and my husband takes one look at the cat and says, “who’s cat did you steal?”
“What are you talking about?” I ask.
“Sweetheart, this is someones cat, it’s not a stray! Look at it, its clean, no fleas, looks like it had a collar, and stray cats just don’t run out to a group of kids. It probably belongs to someone who lives over there, got out, stubbed its toe, you kidnapped it and took it to the vet!”
OH MY GOSH! What do I do now! I think I just stole a cat!

Oh gosh, you could go back to where you found it and put up signs in the area saying found cat with a picture. Also check out petfinder.com. Did the vet scan the cat for a chip? Hope you find the owner, if not, it has found a good home ๐

Oh my goodness Tiffany…this is like the funniest post I’ve read in forever! You’ll have to let us know how it turns out. ๐
Whitney says
OMG! I know I was there for this but reading this makes me laugh!

I was in stitches reading this! You have a great sense of humor! I probably would have done the same thing as I hate to see any animal suffer. My husband would have said the same thing to me if I had brought the cat home. It’s a tough call on what to do…maybe posting fliers for a found cat isn’t so bad. Then, if no one responds, you’ll have peace of mind knowing you didn’t “steal” someone’s cat. Please keep us posted :).

That’s so funny, but it fits your family so well. I would put up flyier too, and if the owners show hopely they will pay the vet bill. What does Miller think about a cat??
P.S. You are just a good mom..
GOOD LUCK…..

That is too funny! I am the same way though. Good luck on finding the kitty’s home.

Excuse me while I laugh out loud!
I would do like everyone is suggesting and post flyers. The owners should be grateful for your care.

First off…We all LOVE Paul. So no offense Paul. But keep the cat. If that cat had a home close enough by the park and he felt like he was safe in going home to get care then he would have wobbled his butt home. Since he wobbled to the kids that tells me he didn’t want to wobble home to an uncaring person. He felt safe in going home with the kids. KEEP THE CAT!!! Hush Paul…I can hear you!!!
andrea says
Yeah, I’d put up the flyers but I hope you like cats because you probably have yourself a new pet!!

Sounds like my life. Nothing is simple! LOL!

Ok seriously like you NEED this on your plate, however I completely agree with Rebe you are just a good mom! I once did the same thing, took it to the vet, found out it had feline leukemia and had to be put to sleep… I felt SOOO horrilbe, I was trying to do the right thing and looked what happened. IMO, you are the HERO MOM!!!! Put fliers up, but who knows it may have gotten out miles and miles away. You are so wonderful for doing all this, I hope he/she turns out to be a WONDERFUL pet! (AND you are raising your children so wonderfully that they have compassion for animals~heehee, remembering the squirrel rabies story!) Wow you really do go through a lot!

Check woodlandsonline.com for posts on lost cats, and you can even post for free that you found someone’s cat, too.

To funny! I would put up some fliers and of course prepare the kiddos for the fact that someone may be looking for him/her. I will be hard no matter what but it is best to try and give you peace of mind if no one claims the cat. On the other hand we took in a stray he was fixed, declawed, and came right to us after a car almost hit him. Our max is one of the sweetest cats we have:) I want to say although there are strays there he could possibly have been a dumped cat as well esp if people know there are strays there and that people are around that area. We honestly think thats what Max was sadly a dumped cat I just don’t get it.

sorry but funny. I am alway picking up dogs and then trying to find there home. I picked up one on my way to daughters school which was 30 mins away. Got home and called the vet that was near where I found the dog. The owner had just come in to see if someone had brought her there. Well Long, Long story I stole the dog from in from of where owner worked. Oops!!! I told him she was walking out side their fence headed off down the street. I pulled over and she jumped in. He was very greatful still. my husband always ask now where did you still this one from when I come home with a stray.

Teaching your kids compassion & kindness towards an animal in need is wonderful. What does Miller resident dog think about it?
Natalie says
Ok…this is a down-right hilarious event your kids will NEVER forget. Keep the cat! If someone is missing it the little darling, there will be an ad in the local paper, signs posted, or notices at the vets and animal shelters. Since the cat was soooooo clean, however, it could very well be an escape “indoor” cat going on a bit of an overwhelmingly exciting adventure! So, just prepare the kids that it may HAVE to be returned!
Anna says
You could always keep it for food storage! Although I don’t think cats have much white meat on them ๐
