When we talk about “filler’s” what does that mean?

Well, at both CVS and Walgreens there are times when your purchase calls for a filler. Interestingly enough it is for different reasons at both stores.

CVS - When you shop at CVS and use Extra Care Bucks (ECB’s) they are just like gift cards, you don’t get any money back from them. So let’s say I have a $5 ECB and my purchase total is $4.50, CVS will NOT be giving me any change back. So if I don’t want to ‘loose’ that .50 cents I can throw in an inexpensive ‘filler’ item to get my total closer to $5.

I also have used filler items when I am using a CVS $/$$ coupon, like a $5 off a $25 purchase. Let’s say my total was $24.20 and I wanted to use that $5 off a $25 purchase I would have to toss in $.80 worth of ‘fillers’ to get my total high enough to use the $5 off coupon. I always try and toss in something that I need, I like the soap bars, or tissue as fillers because 1. I need them and 2. I won’t eat it, it’s not junk! Below are a list of fillers you can find at CVS.

CVS Fillers

Purse size tissue packs

CVS Gold Emblem pretzels .50

Caramels by the register .33

CVS brand cough drops 2/99 cents

Dove soap bar .50

Gum

Candy on sale

CVS brand paper towels .99

Picture at the photo lab .29

Now, at Walgreens I use ‘fillers’ for a totally different reason. The transaction I did earlier today and that is posted below you can see where I used the pudding as ‘fillers’. At Walgreens they have Register Rewards that you get for buying certain products. Couponers like myself like to “roll” them onto other purchases. At Walgreens these Register Rewards (RR) are treaded just like manufacturer coupons, so when you check out you can only have the same number of items as you have coupons.

So for example, today I bought 5 packages of toilet paper, I had 5 coupons, but I wanted to use 2 RR that I had to pay for the remainder of the balance on the TP after my coupons. That means they were going to scan 7 coupons total (5 tp coupons and 2 RR coupons) but I only had 5 packages of tp, so I needed to toss in 2 more ‘fillers’ so I could use those last 2 RR to pay for part of it. Thats why I got the 2 packages of pudding, they were cheap and I needed them anyway and it let me use the $3 and $4 RR. Remember, you have to have the same number of coupons as items scanned at Walgreens.

** Unless of course you are using Walgreens store coupons, they do not count when adding up the number of coupons you can use. See why I think Walgreens is confusing? Don’t worry though, we can figure it out!

Walgreens Fillers

Photo lab picture .09

pencils .09

clearance pens .19- .29

Jello or pudding .20 – .39

Travel pack tissues .29

Post cards ( up front by register ) .25

Walgreens 4.5oz soap .39

My sister had a great idea when we were at Walgreen’s the other night. She always has her camera with her in her purse and we need some fillers. She can pop the memory card out and run over and make a few quick pictures at $.09 each. Great filler! Any questions feel free to email me and I can try and help you! Mylitter@mac.com

What other ‘fillers’ do you use??

Sometimes a sale is “Buy One Get One Free”, other times maybe it’s “Buy One Get One Half Off”. We consistently get confused reader questions surrounding BOGO sales and coupons so today I’ll try to help expose the truth behind these sales!

FIRST, I’LL START WITH BOGO STORE SALES OR PROMOS:

This means that the weekly store ad or a sign on a shelf in the store says, “Buy One product, get One Free”

Here’s an example from this week at CVS:

Act II Popcorn, 3-pk. $2.19
Buy One Get One Free store promo
Use 2 $0.40/1 Act II Popcorn from SS 9/20
Final Price: $0.69 each, when you buy 2

The confused question we often get is this: “How can I use 2 coupons when I’m already get one of the products for free?”
Answer: The store does have the final say, but most stores will except 2 coupons on a BOGO store promo- and they absolutely SHOULD! The manufacturer of the coupon 100% wants you to be able to use two coupons! As long as you physically purchase two of their items, you may use two of their coupons, one per item. When the cashier rings through the Act II Popcorn, both items will scan through at $2.19. Only when you present your store loyalty card will you see the savings of $2.19 on one box of popcorn. You just made two purchases of popcorn at $2.19 each. The store is running a promo that allows you to save $2.19 when you buy 2 boxes. When the store accepts your $0.40 off coupon it’s as good as cash- they will be reimbursed for the full face value of the coupon (plus an $0.08 handling fee that pays for the clearinghouse that does all the work of sorting, etc). Stores do not lose money when you use your valid coupons correctly.
It’s difficult to make that clear when I’m typing and I remember being confused about BOGOs too, but once you see it from the manufacturer’s point of view, it becomes very clear! Most of our store policies address whether a store will accept 2 coupons on a BOGO sale, CVS for example, will accept two coupons- officially. The bottom line, nothing in life is FREE, including your second box of popcorn. It still costs $2.19, but the store chose to run the BOGO style promo instead of discounting the price of each box to $1.10. You purchased two boxes and you should be able to use two coupons. Again, the stores get the last say, but read your store’s coupon policy or call corporate offices to make sure you know what the rule is!

SECOND, LET’S TALK ABOUT BOGO STORE COUPON:

Here’s an example from this week at Target:

Cesar Bistro wet dog food & select others, 3.5 oz $0.99
Buy One Get One Free Target Store Coupon from Red Plum 8/16

So in the above scenario, you’re going to want to buy 2 Cesar Bistro entrees, the subtotal will be $1.98 and then you’ll present your BOGO store coupon and receive savings of $0.99 cents. How many other coupons could you use with this scenario? One? Two? Actually, the answer is up to three! You are allowed one manufacturer and one store coupon per item. Since we are purchasing two items, that means we can use up to 4 coupons, 2 store coupons and 2 manufacturer coupons. If we had two manufacturer coupons worth $0.25/1 Cesar Bistro, we could use two of them. And if we had another store coupon for $0.40/1, we could use it too (except Target store coupons usually limit one per transaction). The BOGO store coupon is for the “free” item. You cannot use two store BOGO coupons to get both items for free.
There is currently a printable manufacturer BOGO Free coupon for Cesar Bistro. Since it’s a manufacturer coupon, you may use it in addition to your BOGO Target coupon. A coupon is only giving you savings on one item, here it is the “free” item. BOGO coupons don’t read “one coupon per two purchases”.

Cesar Bistro wet dog food & select others, 3.5 oz $0.99
Buy One Get One Free Target Store Coupon from Red Plum 8/16
Buy One Get One Free Cesar Bistro – (cesarbistro.com)
Final Price: 2 for Free

Finally, Let’s talk about BOGO manufacturer coupons

At this point, hopefully we’ve busted some of the myths surrounding BOGOs. You may use a BOGO coupon with one other manufacturer coupon as well as with two store coupons, if none of them prohibit it. The BOGO coupon is for the “free” product and you may use another manufacturer coupon on the first product.

Nescafe Tasters Choice $6.99
Use one BOGO Free – Nescafe Taster’s Choice Single Serve – (tasterschoice.com)
Use one $0.50/1 – Nescafe Taster’s Choice – (everydayeating.com)

BOGO COUPONS AND DOUBLING:

This is where I’m least clear on BOGOs. I know what the cash register does when it doubles a BOGO coupon, but I’ve not talked to any corporate offices about whether it is permitted officially in the store’s policy. Let’s use Kmart as the example. Kmart occasionally doubles coupons up to $2.00 in value. This means for every $2.00 off coupon you use, the store will match that savings out of their pocket. They’ll be fully reimbursed for the $2.00 off coupon you use, but not for the portion that they “match”.

Buy two Venom Energy Drinks $1.59
BOGO free – Venom Energy Drinks (bricks.coupons.com) it’s now a $1.00/1 coupon
Final Price: both drinks for free

Here’s what happens at the register: Both drinks scan through at $1.59, then the register reads your coupon and subtracts $1.59. Kmart registers double coupons automatically if they’re under $2.00 in value, so as soon as the register reads you $1.59 savings it automatically doubles it, giving you two drinks for free. Initially this seemed underhanded, but Kmart’s doubling is all about them matching any coupon under $2.00, the value of my BOGO Venom coupon was $1.59. When I think of it that way it makes sense and seems totally legitimate. If the energy drinks had been $2.09, or any value over $2.00, it would not have been doubled and I would have only received the savings once.

Did I help you or make your head spin even more? What parts are still unclear? How have your experiences been when shopping BOGO promos?

When I first started cutting coupons as a new Mom 12 years ago, I struggled. I would clip, and cut, and shop and then find myself only saving $7 on a $80 purchase. I decided it wasn’t worth my time to save $.35 on a loaf of bread and I quit trying. Fast forward 10 years and I found myself in a situation where I needed to save money. I tried couponing again, but still was struggling. One day a good friend finally showed me the “right” way to coupon. Now I am saving 65% on every trip the store, my food budget has been cut in half and I’m still feeding them healthy foods.

With the economy as hard as it is, and with several friends also wanted to learn how to coupon I started posting everything on my blog to help them out. I also started teaching classes once a month! If you can’t make it to the classes, here are some posts you might find helpful to get you started.

Or you get a message that says you have already printed the coupon, and you know that you haven’t? Or, you have been asked to install the coupon printer over and over again? These are very common problems and they can be very frustrating.

It happens to me a bunch. One of the reasons why is that I am on a Mac, but it can happen to you even if you are using a PC. It is SUPER SIMPLE to fix.

This download is free, and I have never heard of any viruses associated with it. It could be possible that your browser settings are not configured properly to allow ActiveX items like the coupon printer to install. If you are using Windows XP, SP2, or Vista, a yellow information bar should appear at the top of your window. That bar can only appear if your security levels are set to “medium” and all ActiveX items are set to “prompt” or “enable”.

If your settings look right, it may be that a past encounter with another product has irreparably shut the prompt down for downloads like the coupon printer. When this is the case, switching to a new browser will give you a clean slate. This happened to me in Internet Explorer- so I downloaded Firefox- and now I have no problem printing coupons. www.mozilla.com/firefox. It will not replace Internet Explorer as your default browser if you don’t want it to. You can run both browsers on your computer (even at the same time).

Print coupons as quickly as possible. Many coupons have a print limit. Once that limit is reached, no more coupons will print, even if you haven’t yet printed any from your computer. Other coupons are limited to two prints per computer. To get a coupon to print twice simply hit the back arrow on your browser and the coupon should print again.

This is a screen shot I took of the steamers coupon I wanted to print, sorry I wish I could have made it larger, but if I had hit “print coupons” it would have given me the “please wait” notification.

All I did was change the 2 little letters in the browser, located where I wrote “Right Here” to xs for Safari the browser I use, and I was able to print it.

I hope this helps!

Do you sit down with your sale paper and your coupons together do you clip the coupons and put them in your binder?

When I get the CVS and Sundays adds I take a look through them to see if I have missed anything, I already know what is going to be on sale because I look at places like Iheartcvs.com that show me what is coming up in the next few weeks. But for me it is easier holding it in my hand than reading it off the computer screen. I also shop my 24 hour CVS late Saturday night so I need to get my act together quickly on Saturday’s so I can run without the kids! During the week if I have to go to the store I will check the store adds quick, check my site for any match-ups, and browse any other sites that might be helpful. For the most part I just do all my match-ups at the store while I am shopping. This is why I like the binder. All my coupons are in one spot and organized by isles of the store. So as I walk down each isle I just flip to that section and I can see all my coupons at once. This way if there are any unadvertised deals I usually catch those.

When I first started couponing, I made a lot of lists. I would pull the coupons I needed and put them in an envelope with the list and use that in the store along with my binder. If I am doing a really big shopping trip I still do this. But this way I didn’t forget anything.

Right now I have such a large “stockpile” of groceries I am shopping just for all the staples and fresh fruits and vegetables. Most of my stockpile items I only pick up if they are free. It took about a good 9 to 12 months to get to the point where I didn’t care if a box of cereal was $.50 I was only going to pick it up if I got it for free.

I find that most Moms have to do much of their organizing while the kids are in bed or taking a nap. Then you can get a list together and go to the store. I know that it can be hard to shop with little kids, trust me I have done it with 6 for many years. Only recently have my older kids been able to babysit while I run to the store. It is hardest for me when I have a little one sitting in the front of the cart because that is where I put my binder, which then gets moved to the basket of the cart and is heard to look through. I like to grab the carts with the little cars if I have the little kids so I can still keep my binder right in front of me.

Always start slowly, if you try and get every deal at one time you will get burned out, frustrated and quit. If you miss a deal, there will be another one. All sales go in cycles, usually about every 3 mo. so that same deal will probably be back again. Pick one store and one drug store to start with and when you are feeling comfortable shopping there and are understanding what deals they run then try other stores. Don’t kill yourself trying to coupon. Just do a little at a time.

How do you shop? Any other tips you can give a newbie?

This is a little video I took and forgot to ever post it. It was explaining a really good deal that a store in my area was having in May and how to take advantage of it.

The first image is a photo of my purchase. I paid $40 far all of this and saved over $150. I also left with $12 in catalina’s for the next purchase.

I am using it now to explain what catalina’s are. Catalina’s are the narrow coupons that are printed out separate from your receipt at the time of check out. I see people throw these away and never look at them. There are often high dollar coupons on them and many times they are actually giving you money back almost like ECB’s.

This image is actually the video. What I forgot to explain is that the deal at the store was buy $30 of selected items (3,000 of them) and get $10 back. I was rolling that $10 into my next purchase. So coming as close to $30 as I could. Giving them the $10 from the previous purchase and then giving them about $12 in coupons to walk out with each purchase costing me around $10.

I always use coupons when I go to the store. But what I really wait for are the combination deals like the one that my Randall’s had above. This is when you save the killer money. All the time spent cutting coupons out and filing them becomes worth it when stores have the deals like this. Kroger stores have a mix and match sale about ever 3-4 months. I will about blow all my coupons during that week. But stock up for months, or even fill my years supply of things.

Where do I put it all? That is really another post….. But, here in the south we don’t have basements and the heat and bugs prevents you from storing anything in the garage. I also have a smaller older house so the closets are really small. I just get really creative! But it is worth it to only spend $400-$500 a month on food for 8 of us.

Any creative storage ideas??

**UPDATE – I finally got a big enough binder that I am only using one binder and not two! But I am still organizing it the same way.

In the past month, I have been stopped almost every time I am in the store and asked about my binders that I keep my coupons in.

This is a very quick and rough video explaining how I organize my coupons.

I buy anywhere from 4-10 Sunday papers a week, depending on the coupons. I have one delivered to my house, I also “steal” my parents inserts! On Saturday’s they sell the early edition Sunday paper, this one has the coupons in it. If I get lucky my $1 store has them for only $1 on Saturday, if I don’t get there in time I have to run over to Walmart and pay $1.75. I will sit in the store and look through the coupons to decide how many papers I want to buy. If they have lots of Buy one get one free items or coupons I like I get more. You can also go online and google “Smart Source” and “Red Plum” to find out ahead of time what coupons will be in the paper.

I use a binder and baseball card holders. I cut each coupon out and file them by sections of the store. I put the binder on the spine in the child seat and walk through the store flipping to that section as I am in each aisle.

These are the tabs I use in my grocery binder: Dairy, boxed, frozen, drinks, snacks, canned and jars, deli, non-food, animals, Mom and baby, baking, cereal, cleaning, paper goods, bread and vegetables. These are the tabs I have in my cvs binder: shaving, lotion and body wash, teeth, deodorant, shampoo and hair, make up, and pharmacy.

I try and go to the store without kids late at night. I NEVER go between 3-8pm with kids, it is a nightmare! If I go in the morning with my little ones or if I have to take all of them I always give them a job to do. The older kids hold coupons, all of them can help me look for items even the little ones. I try to make it fun for everyone or I end up yelling!

Many times I have had a bigger child push a cart while I shop, or even each of us push a cart if there are specific deals going on where I have to go through the checkout multiple times. Kids are smart and they want to help, it keeps them busy and makes them feel important. I try and have them use their math skills and figure out the prices in their heads.

If you have any specific questions please ask, when I have a chance to make a better video and include everything that I forgot I will!
